My son and I had a discussion today about the best acting Tom Hanks ever did and my son said it was Forrest Gump, and I said it was Philadelphia story. In terms of best move, I will still say Philadelphia story, but of course you guys might like something different.
I look up his bio and I am so impressed, it turns out he won an oscar for both movies and it was the only time in 55 years of the oscars that anyone had done that.
He bio is amazing. He is currently the vice president of the oscars association. But you really need to read about his brilliant career.
What is your favourite Tom Hanks movie and why?

My first instinct would be Forrest Gump but I also really liked him in Cast away. Cast away was great because he was basically the only star for awhile in the movie. And not to forget the Green Mile. Man! He's such a great actor and most of the movies he's played in I have loved. EXCEPT Charlie Wilson's war. I hated that movie.

My husband loves Castaway, I love all his movies even Big and Forrest Gump. He did a great job with that movie. But as I said I am a big a fan of his. He has had a amazing carreer and we haven't seen the last of his talents and movies.

I had to think on this one. I've enjoyed several of his movies over the years and to pick one isn't that easy. I think though I would go with either "The Green Mile" or "Catch Me If You Can". I have both movies here and we watch them fairly regularly. He was fantastic in both of them.
I remember when he started out on the tv show "Busom Buddies". He's come a long way since then. Actually yes he did win two Oscars in a row but he was not the first one to do so. He was he second actually. Spencer Tracy won in 1937 and 1938 which was done 55 years previously.

You're welcome. Tom Hanks winning that way was a big story when it happened because it is such a rare occurrence. He is a phenomenal actor who deserved them from what I could see. I also loved him in "The Da Vinci Code". I can't wait to see the prequel "Angels and Demons" which he is supposed to star in.

First thing. The movie is Philadelphia not Philadelphia Story, that is the movie starring Katherine Hepburn.I don't want you to go to rent one and get the other.
I think his best film was Philadelphia but you asked what is my favorite. My favorite is Bachelor Party. It is a typical zany comedy from the 80's. It isn't profound but I do love it.

I like both of his movie, whose name you have written in your discussion .
I saw both with my friends and both were new story . But Philadelphia is the best movie I have ever seen in terms of acting . Can you remember that dance , which tom hanks did in it on opera song . What was emotion on his face ....?
I can never forget that , it was really touching and can hurt you , when ever you feel the same ...
Thanks !!!

Hello winterose. Wow they're are a lot of great tom hanks' movies. I like Cast Away because you can really feel how a man can survive in a deserted island all by himself. I also like Forrest Gump because he has an interesting life and Tom Hanks portrayed his character very well. I also liked The Terminal. Nice story and very interesting. I also like Splash. Nice story and funny.

Forrest Gump. I never really watched it, until my boyfriend had it on. I had a deeper insight, and new appreciation, and he loves that movie. Tom Hanks is brilliant in his depiction of the role. This movie is deep, and full of unconditional, true love....It makes me cry each time I see it, more and more.
A movie you have to watch a time or two, to appreciate all of it's beauty...

yes it is a very deep movie, and shows as that the only limitations we have are the ones we make in our own mind.

Wow, great question, since I love most of his movies. If I really have to choose I will go with Cast Away, it just gives the idea of how living on an island would be. I can watch it over and over. Second place I would put catch me if you can.

I would have to agree with your son. Tom Hanks did a wonderful job in Forrest Gump. I can watch this movie over and over again, without getting tired of it. I also liked Cast Away and Saving Private Ryan, but Forrest Gump is #1 in my book. Tom Hanks is a outstanding actor, so any movie that he's in, turns out to be a wonderful movie.

I agree about Forrest gump and feel it was one of the greatest acting performances of the last twenty years. He was also brilliant in Philadelphia and helped to raise awareness of HIV and Aids as a result. I think Tom Hanks is one of the best actors in the business and he always delivers in each film he stars in. One of my favourites of recent times would be The Road To Perdition.

Hi Winterose, I have never seen Philadelpia Story even though it is in my cupboard to wach so therefore at this moment in time I would haver to say Forrest Gump as it is such an inspirational story and shows how with determination and love anything can be achieved. I love the fact that he kept his promise to his friend and started in the shrimp business and also his innocent nature that allowed him to help so many without even realising. I just loved it. A remarkable man Forrest Gump and Tom Hanks. Ellie :D

Philadelphia story was indeed a very good film and extremely sad. I think that my favourite film of his has to be the green mile. I think that was an excellent film and is one that I can watch again and again. I think the element of magic in it and the characters that are in it all make it a truly enjoyable film. I have only recently realised that there is a book about the green mile too and so I would love to read that now.

It is rare that you can find an actor that can do both comedy and drama so well like Tom does.
