Ahm.. Ok. Thanks.. It means that the development of the program lies on private individuals rather than on private corporations like Microsoft.

Open source softwares are softwares that are free to download, including the source code.
They are then free to use, if you make any changes to the source code to improve the product you are expected to upload those back, this means that these programs are frequently updated with things that users want to see.
