I hold a Bachelors Degree in Science and I'm working in a firm that specialises in Payroll Accounting. I joined 5 months ago. My predecessor was about to leave and had no qualms about thrusting the work at me with no proper briefing. It seems that the entire office knew nothing about kind of work he did or how to do it. I had to pick up where he left off and learn everything all on my own through trial and error which i ultimately accomplished. Now, heres the problem. While most of my seniors find me indispensible the department i work in is terribly understaffed. I end up working overtime most days and im even called on Sundays and public holidays. The situation is getting out of control. I don't remember the last time i had a Sunday all to myself. How do i say NO?

It is high time you talk with your management. Do you know something, if you keep working every other day without even a holiday, your productivity goes down; moreover if you keep doing lots of work, then again there is not fulfilled work. Talk with your management that you really need another two people to do the work that you are doing. You need to take up the initiative of putting your needs and wants. Infact if I am the HR manager of your firm (I am a HR person), I will really appreciate if you take the initiative. If you keep on doing and doing, there will be no end to this, and the best thing is, you are creating an impression on the management that a single person could really handle this and there is no need to be added with more staff which means more spending. So take up the initiative and talk with the people above you and have the necessary staff. Hope this will help.
