I love to travel and I'm a bit of a history nerd. I was wondering what historical locations you guys have been to. Also, let me know what you liked about the places and whether you'd recommend a visit. If you'd like you can also talk about any historical sites that you'd love to visit.
When I was in High School I visited Europe twice. While there I saw many historical locations and saw a lot of amazing art. One place that particularly struck me was the concentration camp we visited in Austria. It was the last concentration camp to shut down. Just seeing the places where people were forced to live in cramped spaces and the places where so many people were killed is hard to describe.
When it comes to historical places I haven't visisted yet, I'd really like to visit Gettysburg and Egypt. As a kid in school I was always into studying the Civil War and particularly the Battle of Gettysburg. My fascination with Egypt also comes from childhood history lessons (and movies/television). I love how the pyramids were made with such precision and done so without the advances in technology that are now used for building such large structures.

If you're a civil war buff at all you must see Gettysburg! It is amazing! I had a great great grandfather who was wounded and captured there. I knew what division he served with and one the guides there took me the spot where his division was engaged (Picketts charge). i got chills standing in the spot. It is a beautiful spot and much larger than I had expected. There is a quiet to the place that is hard to explain, even when it is very crowded. i don't know if you believe in ghosts, not sure I do, but when you're there you always get the feeling that if yopu turn your head quickly enough, you'll see someone. Not a scary feeling, just a feeling that someone is cery curious. Whether you're a Yankee or a Rebel, the monuments are beautiful. The monument to Robert E Lee is a full sized statue of him on Traveler and is awesome. Definitely try to visit!

I enjoy visiting historical sites, even though History was probably my worst subject of study when I was in school. I have been to Gettysburg, and even though it is such a sad site, I think that every American should visit there at some point in their lifetime. I have even written a brief article on it. Here is the link if you care to comment. http://www.ehow.com/how_5507821_travel-gettysburg-pa-budget.html
One place that I might suggest visiting traveling to is Wilmington, NC. It is a very unique small town where a lot of movies were shot. Being so close to Fort Sumter and Charleston, SC the fort there has a lot of history as well.
Speaking of Egypt and the Pyramids. Every time I am trying to complete a difficult task, and move something that is very heavy by myself, I tend to think to myself...."If the Egyptians could build the pyramids" and it sort of gives me a little extra strength and confidence. Although, sometimes I pay for it the next day. LOL
I just noticed this discussion was started over a year ago, but I did find it quite interesting. I hope you will enjoy your travels and remember, wherever your travels might be, I hope they are lots of fun and mostly free!
