I was trying to think of a way to ask this same question yesterday. I noticed some men have mostly friends that are pretty girls. I wondered if they choose thier friends by looking at their avatars.
I choose friends who are interested in the same things as I am. I met a friend on here who mentioned making her own homemade cleaning products. I was very interested in learning how to do that so I added her as a friend. I read all her discussions and asked a lot of questions and have learned alot from her in the past few weeks.
Some of my friends chose me. I assume that they responded to the same discussion that I have, and found that we had similar interests.
I hope they didn't just choose me because of my avatar.
Who knows if that picture is really me or not? I'll never tell. hehehe.

Avatar doesn't really matter to me,writing skills are nice to have but not necessary,we all learn something new every day.
What I would be looking at is their discussions/responses,whether we have similar way of thinking and whether I like their point of view.

For me it has nothing to do with someone's avatar. If I send out a friends request it is because this is a person who I have enjoyed reading. Their questions are good or their responses are good. It is someone who I see as being similar to myself in some way or who makes me laugh or makes me think.
I want to enjoy opening my email in the morning or afternoon and seeing my friends new discussions or responses to my discussions.
I have been fortunate and made a lot of really interesting friends here. And a few of them have become close friends. We make each other laugh. We joke in our responses. We share a piece of who we are with each other. And that is what it is all about.
