I used to think perhaps sleeping less can help losing weight ,not when I read this :
An extra hour between the sheets at night might be the key to shedding excess weight and fighting obesity, according to recent research.
More sleep could be the ideal way of stabilizing weight or slimming. While poor eating habits and lack of exercise clearly play a role in the global rise of obesity, recent data indicates that lack of sleep may also be a factor,
and one that is often under-estimated.
Two key hormones produced at night which help regulate appetite were at play, researchers said.
It's shown that less sleep (two four-hour nights) caused an 18 percent loss of appetite-cutting leptin and a 28 percent increase of appetite-causing grehlinSuch hormonal changes made people hungry for foods heavy in fats and sugars such
as chips, biscuits, cakes and peanuts, she added.
The sleep loss caused a 23 to 24 percent increase in hunger,
translating into an extra 350 to 500 kilocalories a day, which for a young sedentary adult of normal weight could lead to a major amount of added weight.
How many hours do you sleep in a day?Do you think it's enough for you?

Wow, thanks for those details! It was really informative. For me, my sleeping habits normally fluctuate between 5 hours to 15 hours a day. As a student, when I have classes I'll sleep between 5 hours to 8 hours a day. If I'm on holidays (like now), I'll sleep much longer, in the range of 8 hours to 15 hours. I know that sleeping 15 hours a day is a bit "over-the-line" but I just can't help it because sleeping is my hobby! Depending on how sleepy I feel after waking up from sleep, that would determine whether I had enough sleep or not....

In the past, I used to sleep 7-8 hours a day. But now I only sleep 5-6 hours a day. I don't take a nap after lunch. I spend it for night. Because when I take a nap after lunch, in the afternoon I'll feel tired. So I don't do anything for good and the night I can't sleep more.

Thanks very much for providing such a useful informatin. I sleep for 7 hours at night and I feel fresh, when I get up in the morning. I feel 7- 8 hours sleep is enough for me. I feel sleep recharges us and rejuvenates us for the next day. On weekends I try and go for sleep in the afternoon too, which is not possible on week days.

I sleep about an average of 8 hours at night. I find the need to take a nap or a short sleep also after lunch time.
I think it is enough, as recommended.
Just to add:
Reasons for sleeping and waking up early.
Evening at 9 - 11pm: is the time for eliminating unnecessary/toxic chemicals (detoxification) from the antibody system (lymph nodes). This time duration should be spent by relaxing or listening to music. If during this time a housewife is still in an unrelaxed state such as washing the dishes or monitoring children doing their homework, this will have a negative impact on health.
Evening at 11pm - 1am: is the detoxification process in the liver, and ideally should be done in a deep sleep state.
Early morning 1 - 3am: detoxification process in the gall, also ideally done in a deep sleep state.
Early morning 3 - 5am: detoxification in the lungs. Therefore there will sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time.. Since the detoxification process had reached the respiratory tract, there is no need to take cough medicine so as not to interfere with toxin removal process.
Morning 5 - 7am: detoxification in the colon, you should empty your bowel.
Morning 7 - 9am: absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, you should be having breakfast at this time. Breakfast should be earlier, before 6:30am, for those who are sick. Breakfast before 7:30am is very beneficial to those wanting to stay fit . Those who always skip breakfast, they should change their habits, and it is still better to eat breakfast late until 9 - 10am rather than no meal at all.
Sleeping so late and waking up too late will disrupt the process of removing unnecessary chemicals. Aside from that, midnight to 4:00 am is the time when the bone marrow produces blood. Therefore, have a good sleep and don't sleep late.

Maybe this is why I have packed on so much weight since having our second child! LOL! We have a 2 1/2 year old & a 15 month old & some nights I am up 3-4 times because the oldest has growing pains & they have both been sick! I have been losing weight but I am on weight watchers - extra sleep might make it go faster!

Wow I found all of this information very interesting. Thank you for sharing it. My husband used to have a very difficult time sleeping and for years only got between 3 and 6 hours of sleep a night. During that time he has gained almost 100 lbs. Now he is on medication that helps him get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep a night. He has recently started the first diet that he has not felt uncomfortable with and is doing well sticking with it. Now we are wondering if we can attribute some of this to his sleeping habits.

I'm glad they are finally coming out with this data. I've been saying this for years. If you are asleep, there are less hours for you to be eating useless junk food, therefore, less weight gain.
If you're not awake to eat the food, you can't gain weight from it. :)
