Why is race so important in this presidential race?

Maybe it's naivety, maybe it's because I'm not a US citizen but I think sexism is more of a problem than racism. Seems most average white American guys would rather have a black male president than a white female one.
I think it goes deep to the heart of the puritanical past of the US founding colonists where the father was head of the family.
