On our cruise from Galveston to the Caribbean we had a blast. We went to Cozumel and Costa Maya. Shopping in Cozumel was wonderful and we got to explore the Mayan ruins in Costa Maya. Wonderful shore excursions, but just as much fun while at sea.
The food was exquisite and lots of shopping on board. The ship's casino was fun too. Cruise ships are like a floating city. They have everything you can think of.
You will have to participate in a lifeboat drill before you get to do anything, but once that is over the rest of the cruise is strictly at your leisure. Join in structured activities spa treatments see stage shows, play miniature golf, climb rock walls, swim...whatever you like. Or just lounge around and enjoy the ride.
You should be prepared for a couple of dressy dinners and casual ones too.
The one advice I can give you is pack light. Or as light as is possible. Comfy walking shoes are a must.
Have a great time on your cruise.

I'm sure you'll love it.
On the ship there is lots to do, go swimming, read in the library, eat, go to the spa, play games, sports, casino, movies, shows, etc, etc.
The staff aboard the ship are always friendly.
The food is always amazing.
We went on our first cruise May of 2007, it was absolutely wonderful! Our cruise went from Los Angeles to Vancouver, BC aboard the Diamond Princess for 5 days.
We will be going on our second cruise in September of 2008, also aboard the Diamond Princess, this time for 23 days going from Vancouver, BC to Russia, Japan, Korea, Alaska and ending up in Beijing, China.
I'm sure you'll enjoy your cruise, theres so much to do!

We took a cruise a couple of years ago. We left from Miami, went to Cancun and returned. It was a four day cruise. We had a blast.
The food was great and plentiful. The activities kept us pretty busy. It seemed there was something to do all the time.
The best part, though, was just getting away from it all. Out in the Caribbean for four days, no phone, no work or any other distractions, was very relaxing. I would highly recommend it for anyone.

I've never "taken a cruise" per se, but I have been on overnight ferry passages. I have sailed from Melbourne to Tasmania and back, and from Greece to Italy. I have also sailed a bunch of day ferries in the Aegean through the Cyclades islands. These were all large ships, some as big as cruiselines, which some of the ships really are. A couple times I had private cabins and other times I had shared accommodations, such as a dorm-room type setup going to Tasmania where there were 24 bunks in the room but still nice and comfy.
For the most part, sailing on big ships is pretty smooth and you may not even feel the motion of the ocean. Even the day ferries in Greece had activities, and a cruiseline will have lots of things to do while the ship is sailing, plus all the great food. I'd suggest pre-booking some shore excursions for some of your ports-of-call, others you may just want to bum around on your own. Pack a light jacket even for the tropics, it can be chilly at night on the open sea.
