Have you ever fallen while going UP the stairs?

I did several times when we were in Rarotonga recently. We rented a beautiful two storey home with an outdoor pool, decked out bbq area, landscaped grounds and beautiful ocean views. They had a 15 step staircase which we had to use to get to our bedroom downstairs. I couldn't believe it but I now have bruises on my shins and even a cut on my right shin from falling up the stairs. Talk about clumsy but wearing heels didn't help either, nor trying to lug up two heavy suitcases when it was time to leave.
I suppose I can consider myself lucky that I didn't fall DOWN the stairs huh?
So has this happened to you? how did it happen? were you bruised and cut up like I was? or just slightly hurt from the fall?

You know I think at some time everyone falls upstairs at least once in there life. I find it very hard to believe that someone has NEVER done it once. That is not as bad as what my husband did. He fell out of bed while trying to get into bed. I dont know how he did it and nor do I want to know all I know is he was almost in bed and next thing I hear "thud" on the floor. All we could do is laugh it was too funny(even tho he bum hurt a bit)

that is the way I generally fall - up the stairs rather than down... and while it hurts it is not nearly as dangerous as down the stairs, so I share your thankfulness in that regards.
I think the worst I ever received out of falling up stairs is a little rug burn on heel of hands and knees.

Ouch I don't like rug burns either - that happened to me a few times in my younger days!

I was trying to look all cute in my dress for the wedding when I stumbled in my heels and then the second time was when I was trying to carry our suitcases up the stairs - noone bothered to help me as my husband was too busy getting a last minute dip in the pool to even bother LOL

i did! when I was about 8 or 9 at a cousin's house. I just rolled down like a ball and it hurts like crazy. I think it triggered my fear of falling.

Yup trust me to walk up the stair in heels. It's actually a long time since I wore a pair of heels because of my arhcillens tendon I ruptured a few years back. I should of just put them on when I got to the top of the stairs LOL

I feel down the stairs here at my house. I landed on my back. Wow was I bruised for about a couple of weeks. I was arguing with my friend and I tried to go down the stairs to fast because I was upset. I learned a lesson not to go down the stairs to fast if I am upset.

Now that would of hurt falling on your back. I hope it didn't create any further injuries from that fall.

No you are not the only one that has fallen up the stairs. I do it sometimes when I am running from my basement living area. The carpet has become slick in spots, so socks will slide and down, or should I say up I go!!! I have only had some minor bruising, again because the steps are carpeted. But it still hurts like crazy because that part of the leg has very little meat to cushion the blow.

It still hurts for me. The bruising is going away but it's still tender to the touch.

Luckily I haven't done this recently, so my shins are fine. Next time I would have hubby take the stuff up the stairs, then "accidentally" call him real loud so he can see how it feels lol!

oh yeah... back in college, on school, its like i fell 5 steps down the stairs... i was in a hurry to get into my class... that's why...
but the worst was when i was in lrt. (light rail transit),.. i missed my station so i alight in the next one, i was not familiar to ti, so i look around fillowing other passenger, when i look back i saw another stair, an exit, it happend that i was the only one trying to get out of that station using that exit...
i soon discovered why...
it was raining... the steps were slippery...well,...
i slipped, and felll from the top down to,.. i think 10 steps down..... i rolled my self while falling covering my head.. i ended up with a fractured shoulder...
since then, whenever im in a stairs, i hold the railings, i learned my lessons,.....

I have had that happen going up the steps to fast and miss a step or trip over my feet. That happens to everyone from time to time. But the good thing about that is your not falling down the stairs. You might get a bruse on your shin or something but not as bad as it would be if you fell down the stairs.

Yes I have fallen up the stairs a few times, a few times when I have been drunk and then a few times when I am just rushing about!! I have never hurt myself though, I bet it really hurt banging your shin though. I have done that before and it was enough to bring tears to my eyes!! Yes you were very lucky that you did not actually fall down the stairs.

hello maddysmommy,
i am not sure if i belong here coz i havent fall while going up yet,
BUT if you will ask me if i have fallen going down then that would be a big YES.
we had a spiral stairs at home and i just woke up and was asking mom what is the breakfast and i dont know what happened all i remember was i am at the bottom and just a vague image of me going round and round LOL
i had a huge bruise on my arm as well as on my legs, the thing is 2 days from that day will be my estrange brother's wedding and i so happen to be one of the maid of honor wearing a sleeveless and it sure is like an eggplant at the time of wedding.
my mom tried to do hot and cold compress but it didnt help coz it was a very bad fall i guess.
just got lucky (like you) that i didnt end up breaking my bones coz it is a steal spiral stairs and i started from top to bottom haha that's what happens when your mind is set on what is breakfast and not on the steps
takecare and i hope your son is feeling better now.

I have...TWICE and both times, I ended up with badly sprained ankles and/or bruised knees.
The first time I did it was when I was a student and walking up the stairs. I don't really know what happened but I tripped and fell on my knees. =.= Ended up with bruised knees for days.
The second time was in four inch heels, carrying tonnes of files...I think the heel wasn't exactly secure so I slipped and needless to say, the files went everywhere and I ended up going on two weeks medical leave with a very badly sprained ankle which took another two weeks to heal.
Clumsy me. *shrugs*

It has happened to me on several occasions. It is usually because I am rushing, or I am wearing footwear that is too big for me (I currently wear my father's old loafers as house slippers). My 11 year old is notorious for falling up the stairs. When she was younger we would hear her, and then the crying. Now we hear the thump and then, "I'm okay, I'm okay." She is too funny. But man, she certainly has bruises on her legs, but then again, she plays lots of sports.
With fibromyalgia clumsiness is symptom. I have bruises on my thighs mainly from walking into coffee tables.

I hate when that happens too. I always catch the corner of a coffee table, dining table, even a desk table where I use to work in Samoa and always end up in bruises. I bruise easily.

I used to fall down the stairs alot when I was young but not now when I grew up. I am more careful and I don't wear high heels and if I do I take one step at a time slowly. I don't care if people think I walk slow on the stairs..It's better to walk like that than fall and get shamed. We should be very careful going up and down the stairs so we won't fall. Better to be careful than sorry.

I should of gone up the stairs in bare feet and put on my heels when I reached the top lol I don't know why i didn't do it that way. It's been years since I last wore heels because I ruptured my archilles tendon a few years back.

I have not fallen like this in a big way but it does hurt to point the of wailing when I trip and bump my shin on the stair.
That area of the leg has no flesh to cushion a blow and man does the bone and skin raise hell when they are banged up like that. Hope your bruises get well soon and all the phantom pains disappear soon as well.
Sounds like you enjoyed yourself so thank goodness it was all worth it. (lol)

haha It was well worth it bruises, scrapes and all. We had a lovely time and the wedding was just beautiful. Spending time with my inlaws and just relaxing and not having a care in the world, was just fantastic.
I miss the place and food already!

I was in highschool, carrying my books up the stairs (I was in calculus, physics, etc, always had a million books and a couple pens) and it was passing time, 4 minutes to get up to the 3rd floor.
I started going up the 2nd floor stairs, and my books started sliding, too many people in the stairwell...and I took a step up, and for some reason it was gone. So I fell to the next stair(up), dropped all my books and papers in the stairwell, and started laughing hysterically. I had tears streaming down my face, the bell was ringing and some of my friends had come up the stairs and were all picking it up, but afraid to be late. I wasn't, I fell. I knew I couldn't be in trouble. But it was hilarious.
