Hair today...Gone in a Half an Hour...

Help! I have been wanting to curl my hair and have been giving it a shot. It takes about a half an hour to get it all done and, by the time I am done, the first curls have already fallen to barely a wave. It is frustrating. I try curling then spraying the curls with hairspray before I finger through the curls. But, even if I can get some of it to stay a little curly, it eventually all falls flat. So, do any of you know of a product that will help my hair hold the curl after I get done with the curling iron and throughout the day? I really like the look. I have naturally wavey, sort of frizzy hair, which I usually flat iron straight but have always had a problem getting my naturally wavy hair to hold curl when I want it to look somewhat more polished. I like it straight but, I sort of like the way that the curly style adds a little bit of glamor for the day. Plus, now that I color my hair brown, it looks really good curly. Help! If you can! I really want to make this work.

I have similar hair to you by the sound of it. What I do instead of using tongs to curl my hair is use a scrunch jelly when it is wet. All you do is put it through your hair like a gel, then use your hands to srunch your hair. It has the effect of strong hold gel but helps to keep your curls in during the day. You dont even need to finger the curls to make them look great, just scrunch and go! Hope this helps

Can you get it at the grocery store? Is there a specific product line that carries it? Thank you for your help!

I use Umburtto Gianni (I think!) They do loads of products for curly hair. I also use their shampoo and conditioner for curly hair, its great. The product range is called 'curl friends'

cortjo, I have straight hair as well, the only way I have every had curls last is to use a ton of moose then hair spray the shaft I am going to curl, then spray in place again. It is so much work, another thing that works for me is sponge rollers the night before I want to go out. Use styling gel on damp hair and roll it up. I never take it down untill I am ready to dress for the evening.

The sponge rollers are kind to your head when you sleep on them, and tend to give you a good tight curl to begin with, it relaxes over time but at least you start off with a curl and a bounce LMAO..... I have tried perms, omg they have always turned out disasters for me.

It does sound like the combination of mousse and hairspray are my two best options. It does seem like a lot of work though! LOL! As for the curlers, I would have to sleep on them as I want the style for the day. I will probably just try the mousse and hairspray. Thank you for your suggestions!

I also have wavy/frizzy hair, and I can never get it to stay curly or straight. It always does the opposite of what I want it to do. :) Even with a ton of hairspray, which most people swear by for holding the curls, it will eventually go straight. I think the ONLY time that they've gotten my hair to cooperate was when I was in a wedding. The hairstylist curled and teased and bobby pinned ALL of my hair (which went to the middle of my back) on top of my head, and it actually stayed there, and curled. Then I had to pry out all of the bobby pins and try to wash my hair to get it to be normal again. Best of luck with getting curls, though! :)

LOL...I had that done to mine one time...I don't remember what for, prom or wedding probably...and it was a nightmare to get undone! There was so much hairspray holding it together that it stayed mostly in place even after I fished the pins out, I could not get a comb through it and it ended up a tangled mess when I washed it. I looked really nice all done up like that though!

LOL! Thanks! I may be able to help you with the straightening problem. I figured out how to get my hair to stay stick straight a couple of years ago. Because, before I figured it out, I would basically have the opposite problem from the curling. Not that it would go from straightened to curly but, it would go from straightened to frizzy if there was even a spec of moisture in the air. Now, I can go out in a rainstorm for even a couple of minutes and my hair will still stay straight. So, it is all about heat. The hotter the better. If you can get an iron that goes up to a couple hundred degrees (maybe 450) you will likely win the battle to straighten your hair. I have an iron that, while I am not sure of the degree it goes up to (probably no lower that 250 as a high or as high as 450) 40. That is the number on the little roller thing. It goes from 1 to 40 by 5's I think. Anyway, I use notch 1 to flat iron my bangs and the 40 notch to flat iron the rest of my hair. It is shiny, smooth, straight, and soft. And, it stays that way. It will smell like your hair is burning but, it isn't. And, to protect your hair, use a serum like one from Aveda. I use it and it protects my hair nicely. Actually, the majority of the damage to my hair comes from coloring. I never had split ends until I started coloring my hair. Sheesh! The things we will do in the name of beauty! Ugh! LOL! One other thing is that while you are running the flat iron through your hair, don't fun it through slowly. You can go back over it if you want but, just run it through your hair like you would a comb or brush. Anyway, heat is the key to a lasting hairstyle. I am just not sure I can use that much heat to curl my hair because then I would risk burning my hair due to how long you have to leave the iron on your hair. But, heat is most definitely a key factor in a lasting straightening of your hair.

Do we share the same hair or something because I have exactly the same problem except that mine takes about 2 hours because it is quite long!! I have tried everything to get it to curl and stay curled and it just will not!! The worst thing I did at new year was I curled it and half of my head curled and stayed really well, the other half would not even get a wave in it, New years eve and my hair was a disaster!! The best thing that I have found that helps to get a curl in, is to put mousse on to each strand before I curl it and then leave it on the tongs for as long as possible and then when you take the tong outor whatever you use then just spray the strongest hairspray you can get on it.

I love curls in my hair, my daughter has a natural wave in hers and some days it hangs in ringlets, it is gorgeous. I am glad you like my avatar, it has had quite a positive response, no one seemed to really like the old one!!

It sounds like we have the same hair! LOL! Isn't it glorious? LOL! I will have to try that with the mouse. I really want to get this style down because, in the few seconds that I have it, it really is cute! Pretty even! LOL! So, thank you for the advice and, I hope you have some luck getting your curly style to work someday! BTW...I like your new avatar! It is really pretty!

Well I have really thick hair, and I used to have problems curling it if I had even what I thought was a small enough thick strand. But I realized smaller curls would work. You could use suave mousse, before you try and curl it. Spray strand, curl, spray again. It puts a lot of hairspray in your hair, but if you spray it after you curl some of it, that helps too. My hair is thick, so putting a lot of products in it (also since I don't much) only really helped me, but make sure you don't weigh down your hair, because curls will fall out...obviously. Gravity is a big probelm, and if it's humid out, not great for your hair. Eventually, they'll fall if your hair isn't curled naturally or professionally, sometimes theyre prettier that way... Hope I helped at all...lol

Perms were always easier, make sure you don't have a cowlick, or you are aware of where they are BEFORE doing so....just trust me..lol...or you'll end up with a straight spike, and it SUCKS waiting for your hair to grow..

My hair is stick straight, and also loses it's curl as soon as the heat of the iron is off of the hair. What I do to combat this is the following: I use Salon Selectives aerosol hair spray(any aerosol will work, so it gives it a fine mint rather than just a spray bottle). I first make sure that my hair is detangled and compeltely dry. I then take each piece as I am getting ready to curl it, I spray it with a little of the hair spray, wait for it to dry for a second, then curl my hair as usual. Once the hair spray hits the curling iron hits the hair spray, it will sizzle for a second or to, don't worry, its not frying your hair off yet. I usually count to 10 then release it. Do your whole head before you try and style it. It will look really choppy and piecy while you are doing it. Just leave it until you finish curling your entire head. Then flip your head up and down till you get the right level of curliness that you want, then style. I should add that you should not use this method to curl your hair everyday, but if you need it to really stay, like for a might-time event. Your hair will literally not move.

I'll try these methods. Thank you. I hate to use too much hairspray as my hair is really thin and prone to tangles but, if I can have the glamorous look of curly hair a few times a week, that might be worth it. And, that is a good tip about the Garnier gel for cuts. Weird but, a good tip nonetheless! LOL! Thank you for your help!

I forgot to add the product that I use to spray it at the end. It's Garnier Fructis extra hold hair gel. Its in a little round tennis ball sizen container with a spray thingy on top. Its like 3 or 4 dollars, but it lasts forever. Once you are done curling your whole head, spray that on there. Should you have some kind of debacle, keep the garnier fructis hair gel stuff with you. If you have an open cut, it will form a protective layer over the skin and help it heal faster. Why you would have hairspray with you when you are camping or whatever else, im not sure, but none the less it works.

Hi cortjo I too have wavy hair and I just recently got some layers put in my hair. I also got something called Hot Sticks by conair. They are hot curlers and they work great. I love them. I also think the layers helped alot. I like the curly look too.

Hey TerryZ. I need to get my hair trimmed. And, when I do, she always layers it a little. Not a lot but, some. I can imagine that it will help a bit the next time I get my hair trimmed. Mine is long and right now it goes down to my bra strap. I think it is about an inch or two, maybe even 3, too long right now. Anyway, I never have luck with hot curlers. No matter how many I have tried. It never works out for me. And, I think I tried some of those sticks too but, that was a total bust for me and I had to return them. LOL! But, thank you for the suggestion.

Doesn't that suck? Seriously! I spend a half an hour extra in the morning trying to make these pretty curls and, they all start off so promising, only to end up flat by the time I get to work. Ugh! So frustrating. We all want something we don't have! LOL! I want to be shorter with either stick straight hair that I don't have to spend any time to achieve, or really curly hair that I also don't want to have to spend any time to achieve. What I have is frizzy no style hair that is fairly easy to straighten but, still takes about 10 minutes to achieve and is really a waste of time to try to turn that frizzy basically no style semi-waviness into a masterpiece of curls. LOL! Ugh!

Seems like you and I have the same hairstyle. My hair is frizzy and slightly curly and I get it relaxed twice a year and flat iron it all the time. I have also tried curling my hair and to no avail, it falls out after 15 minutes LOL I know there are special solutions that you can put on your hair to hold it but not sure which ones are good. I'll check out your discussion if you don't mind :)

I bet the fact that you had your hair relaxed is the reason you can't get it to hold any curl right now. Maybe once the relaxer wears out it will be better about holding curl in the future. And, of course I don't mind you checking out my discussion! I hope it is helpful for you!

I have very long hair with a nice natural wave in a dry climate which gets quite curly on its own in humid areas. I don't need to curl my hair!

Now hair is a problem for all women and if you have natural hair that does what it wants. YOu have to try some of everything and see what works with your hair. NOw i have one suggestion. Go to a salon and see what products the professional use on your hair. Ask the hair dresser question on what store brought products you can us that will work with your hair. NOw they know what trick and techniques that would be used to get your hair to hold a curl. Just an idea try and see what happens.

Hi Well the only thing that i can think of is to have a light perm on your har,but that may give you waves all of the time.My daughters hair is much the same as ouyrs by the sound of it and she can have a lovely hea of curls put in by the hairdresser and then a while later they have all fallen out.Its such a shame. This happened to her on her weding day too!!!I find that If i scrunch mine when im drying it that it gets wavy, but thats about all.Good luck anyway.

Thank you for your suggestion but, any kind of perm would just add to the frizz, as I learned a couple times in the 80's! LOL! Plus, I like the changeability of my hair where I can wear it sleek and straight one day and glamorously curly the next...if I can ever figure out how to get the curls to stick around, that is! LOL! And, that is a bummer about your daughter on her wedding day. I wore mine up and it was curled and hairsprayed within and inch of becoming a brick building so, it stayed put on my wedding day. And, it wasn't fun to wash out afterwards! LOL! Thank you for your suggestion!

Thank you for your suggestion! I might give that a try. I just worry that that will burn my hair when the heat and the mousse mix. But, I might try it on one section of hair and see what happens. Thank you again!

:) Did you find a product that works?? There are a lot of different things to try- I would just start trying them.... but remember depending on the weather will depend on if your hair holds- My hair is straighter than straight- I curl mine as well--- withing a couple of hours- it's blah again- I've tried many many things- My daughter has naturally curly hair and we try to straigten it... it gets curly- Humidity! Let me know what you find- I think it depends on your hair- all products work different for each person's hair.

I went out and got 3 Garnier products. One is a mousse for curls, one is a spray gel for curls and the other is a creamy sort of thing for curls. I haven't tried the gel but, I tried the mousse and the cream together on my damp hair. I dried my hair by scrunching it but, that wasn't really doing much more than making my hair look like straw so, I brushed it out and dried it the rest of the way and then I used my curling iron and, it did work. It isn't perfect because eventually the curl runs out by the end of the day but, it worked pretty well for the majority of the day. And, since I wash my hair only every other day, I just dampened my hair with a squirt bottle last night, brushed it all out and let it air dry and then went back to curling it today and, I actually think that most of the curls held have held better today. Possibly because there is hairspray in there too. So, try the garnier products if you can find them in your area. They will basically tell you they are for curls on the bottle. I can't remember the specific names of them but, get the mousse and the cream and try them together. Your hair won't be real soft but, it still works so, it may be worth it. As for the humidity...it does still effect it a bit. But, not as bad as it does without those products. Good luck and let me know if they work for you!

I use Clairoils Herbal Essence totally twisted shampoo to put waves and curls into your hair. It smells just heavenly and make your hair look naturally curly too and I use the companion conditioner that matches it.

Thank you Hatley! I might try that after I run out of my current shampoo. Do you know if they have a blend that also accomodates for color treated hair? I like to help preserve the moisture and the color in my hair. Thank you again!
