Eeek!! A curious swelling, what on earth could it be?

I had a lovely day today, the weather was beautiful, sunny and very warm and I spent some time enjoying it. I walked down to school with my daughter to pick up my two boys and we had a leisurely stroll back home.
On the way home I dropped something and bent to pick it up, and that is when I noticed it, a thick stump that was supposed to be my leg!! I had to look twice, was that really MY leg, from my calf down to my toes it was completely swollen and twice the size of my other leg. I wonder if anyone else noticed it?How on earth could I not have noticed this??
More importantly what on earth caused it? I have not got a clue, all I know is that the bottom half of my leg is completely swollen, there is no pain, no sign of a bite, I have not twisted it or anything.
Does anyone know what could be causing it? Has anyone else ever had a strange swelling happen before?
I have attached a photo of the offending stump, please note it is not as swollen as it was and please do not laugh at the state of my legs!!!

It looks like serious water retention to me. Maybe the cause of bad circulation as well. But anyway, as others have suggested, definitely go to the doctor; even if the symptoms go away, they may be a sign of something more serious.

I agree. My father has this problem. Unfortuntly the pills they give you make you use the bathroom ALOT.
Try elavating your feet.
Let me know how it goes at the doctor. Hugs

I have experienced this once but that was both legs and it was due to water retention from the heat and having been on them too long. I am not a doc so wouldn't like to say for sure especially as it is only the one. Are you sure there is no bite sometimes they can be so miniscule, also a friend of mine was bitten on the arm by a horsefly and it swelled up like that went down and a year later swelled up again with no bite being apparent. I hope it goes down and suggest you raise leg up when resting, but seek advice if still bad tomorrow. Ellie :D
PS LOL I wouldn't dare bare my legs on here!!! Only added that you you told us not to laugh at them and I have never been one to do as I am told. Ellie :D xx

My Goodness sweety - and this wasn't as bad as it was? I was going to say it could be water retention with the hot weather this sometimes gets worse! It may be nothing to worry about sweetheart but I really want you to try and see the dr first thing - please - just to be sure that it is nothing serious - if you cannot get an appointment I would suggest you go to the nearest casualty! I am not trying to scare you and as I said it could be nothing but with a swelling that bad you really have to check it out! xxx

hi rose
did you eat salty food to day or yesterday? did you walk or stand alot? that's cause of fluid build up on the tissue...check your doctor as soon as you can...just concern..

As many have stated you should get it checked out. Until you do try to keep it elevated. This will help with the swelling. If at all possible have it up above your heart but at least above your hip height when you are sitting or laying.
As to what caused it there could be many reasons from minor to serious. Are you allergic to anything? If you are check to see if you could have accidentally taken any of it. The reason I ask this is because i had a similar problem and it turned out to be the bottled water I was drinking. They used magnesium sulfate to purify it and I am allergic to sulfates. It caused me to swell big time and mostly just in one leg.
In the mean time be careful because the swelling could cause cellulitis, infection of the cells. So get it checked as soon as you can ok? Cellulitis is not something you want to have happen.

I'm glad to hear it's going down. That is good news. I do hope you check with a doctor though because it could be something serious. I know that is sometimes easier said then done.

Oh thats what cellulitis is, I was thinking of something else. I have been keeping the foot up, the swelling has gone down loads, compared to yesterday anyway!!

Well its better if you can get it checked up by a Doctor as soon as possible please do not delay. What ever be the cause for that a major or minor thing once you get it checked up you will be released of that stress. So i wish there is nothing serious and hope you will get it cleared soon. Good luck.

So, I haven't seen that you said anything about whether you got it checked out! Please tell me you did! I am worried about you! That is not natural! If you stumbled and did something to injure yourself, I would tell you to get it checked out but I would be less worried for you because there would be a know reason or cause. But, the fact that you have no reason for this sudden swelling...please tell me you went and got it checked out and the doctor told you what was wrong, how to fix it and that it was nothing too dangerous!
UPDATE PLEASE!

I am sorry that I have not said anything more about this, to be honest I am surprised how much people seem to care!! This is not something I am used too. I expect I will get told off now, and I hate being told off, but I have not been to the doctors, a couple of reasons for this though. The first being that my doctor closes early on a Thursday so I have no chance of being seen, the second was that I got up this morning and the swelling had receeded, it is still puffy but not as bad as it was, I have a dull ache in the ankle and a pain down the back of my leg now, which I did not have yesterday, but what I am thinking is that I have trapped a nerve because the night before it started I did some leg raises and did not warm up first and I remember thinking that I thought I had pulled something as I felt a strange stretch. My hubby is worried about this too, so I said if I still was not happy with it by tomorrow morning then I would phone the docs as soon as I got back from taking the kids school and try and get in then.

In the mean time, to help with the swelling, you should use some ice (an ice pack or a zip lock bag of ice) on it. 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off for maybe 3 times. I hope it is just a trapped nerve. Maybe you pulled a tendon or something.
Thank you for giving me an update! Please updates us again tomorrow after you decide what you are going to do as far as whether you want to go to the doctor or not!
Thank you again for the update and get busy on that ice to help bring the swelling down even more

I think mybe cold compress is not the good way to relieve her symptom,u should do nothing before go to see the doc.I am more and more thinking that the valve broken stands a good chance...maybe you need a operation to restpration.best wishs to you to get well soon

That must have been a shocker indeed. What concerns me is that it did not pain you or anything to indicate that something is wrong. I hate silent illnesses.
As everyone as suggested (its really unavoidable) do get it checked out as soon as possible. Edeima is possible but I think it normally affects both legs...Oh well no use trying to play doc here. Lets leave that up to the professionals.
All the best and i do hope all goes well. (lol)
Ps: Here are three fellows to take with you...

That is quit odd rose.
Sometimes a blockage in the blood vessels can cause swelling. My leg usaully get swollen when i stand for long periods of time.Although it may not be painful i'd have it checked if i were you, just to be on the safe side.I would never laugh as a matter of fact they look alright, swollen and all.

Ok, I have finally made it to my 500 posts and now I get to cut and paste.. Good for me as I caouldn't remember all of this.. I am no doctor, I bet you couldnn't guess that), but I do have a sister whose legs look the same way and she has the following, which I have cut and pasted from Wikipedia..
Lymphedema, also spelled lymphoedema, also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention caused by a compromised lymphatic system. The lymphatic system (often referred to as the body's "second" circulatory system) collects and filters the interstitial fluid of the body. Lymphedema has been barely recognized as being a serious health problem; however, this is slowly changing due to education and awareness. The danger with lymphedema comes from the constant risk of developing an uncontrolled infection in the affected limb. Still, physicians and medical staff who practice in fields where this disease is uncommon may fail to correctly diagnose the condition due to the apparent lack of information regarding this disease.
The above information is just a what if?? I truly hope this helps to identify the problem but you really need to see a doctor as soon as possible so he can treat whatever it is.. good luck to you and take care of it..

The same thing happened to me some weeks ago. Perhaps it was due to the fact that I was walking very little and staying sitting at the computer a lot of time. These two things can lead to a bad circulation and to blood staying in the lower part of one's leg. My doctor told me to take a diuretic and now I am quite well. In my case it was also mainly in one leg, though the other was rather swollen too.

Do you know, the same thing occured to me too, I have been spending a lot of time sitting at the computer and it is one of the first things that my hubby said too.

Are you Diabetic? I know with me being Diabetic, I have had this happen a lot of times with no real apparent reason sometimes. Or maybe you have a skin infection going on there that you may not really realize.
What I would do if I were you, maybe elevate that foot and leg some and see if the swelling decreases any, and if not and it is bothersome, you could go see a Dr. and let them decide from there what is best. Just my thoughts, and wishing you the best.

Hey there Sweetie
That is really Strange as my Mum's Husband has been in Hospital with the same thing since Monday but he did have Pain and could not walk
There might not be a sign of a Bite but it does not mean that you have not been Bitten
Have you been to the Doctor with it yet as it might be a good Idea to go
Hugs to you

Sweetie, I would strongly recommend you see your doctor. This could be caused by poor circulation, is the swollen part cold to the touch? I have had this happen to me a few times now and the last time I saw my doctor about it, he suggested that it could be caused by either water retention or poor circulation.

Not sure where the photo is that you attached. That is very strange how your leg got swollen for no reason. I really think you should get it checkout out at the doctor, just incase it might be serious. I think something must have bit you, or maybe you had an allergic reaction to something you came in contact with or ate. Hope the swelling goes down soon, let us know.
The only time my legs looked like tree stumps lol, was when I was pregnant, they were so swollen from fluid retention. When I pressed my legs it would leave a dent, lol, for a few seconds as there was that much fluid in them. Luckily after having the baby the tree stumps went away.

Could you have been bitten by some insect? I would take my
stumpy leg to my doctor at once or as soon as you can'
get in of course.edema is caused by a number of things and
only a doctor could tellwhich is which. Have you been on a new medication lately? but then seems like both legs would swell. nope best to take that to your doctor. I had both my legs swell up like balloons because of the diabetes med Avandia which now has warningson its label for swelling and for bone loss and for anemima also. And I got all three of these side effects from that one medication. go see your doctor and please gemini rose
let us know how you come out, okay?
