Kidnapped Labs

We recently had our white male lab mix stolen from the lane leading to our house. Our older female black lab mix was with him and evidently escaped as she returned home without her collar and with what appeared to be marks from a catch wire on her nose.
Once we started inquiring around, we learned that labs and lab mixes being stolen is a widespread problem. Others in our state have had dogs stolen out of locked kennels in their back yards. Both Montana and Wyoming have ongoing investigations going due to numerous dognappings.
It is believed that these dogs are being stolen and sold to dog fighting rings to use as "bait" to train the fighting dogs. It is horrible to think that our beloved pet might have fallen into the hands of these terrible people.
Have you noticed any increase in dog disappearances in your area?

Unfortunately this happens in the country too! We live in a rural area, at least 30 miles from any town of substantial size. Our closest neighbor lives a half mile away. At most, there might be six cars that go by our house in a day's time (an one of those is the mail carrier!)
This is a close knit community and even before this happened, people took notice of "strangers" appearing in the area, but with this incident, everyone is even more alert.

Wow. I am so sorry to hear this. I hope you find some justification in the stealing of your dog. I too have two labs. They are sisters and it would break my heart to have them torn apart. Or worse, both taken. I feel so much for you right now. It's just terrible, the things that are happening to these dogs. I just don't get why people do the things that they do. It's just rediculous.

I keep hoping that someone just admired him and took him as a pet for themselves and that he is being loved and getting good care - but deep down I know that probably isn't the case.
