Having sung this two, I like Choral Fantasia better than Ode to Joy

The piano solo was superb and fantastic. Toward the climax the orchestra and the choir just sound so much more grand.

I have sung in the Choral Fantasia, that too the solo bass part years ago. All the same, in comparison with the Ode to Joy, the Choral Fantasia is a lot of noise about something not so big, in fact, little. Maybe it was a sort of a Dress Rehearsal for the shape of things to come. It is a delightful piece alright, very Beethovenian if I may say so, but if it had been the final movement of a larger work, it would have been far more popular than it is today.
It stole the show when it was first played, along with the 5th and 6th symphonies, I think...

Wow, you sang the solo bass part? I would love to hear ya! I like what you said, "It's very Beethovenian". I totally agree. I remember when we were rehearsing this with the orchestra I used to get amused by our conductor who was conducting a little bit like a madman and I could imagine Beethoven himself conducting the orchestra. How mad he must have been.
