Towel Etiquette 101...

Don't ask me why this question popped into my head, it just did.
When I shower, I always have to use a fresh clean towel. I was discussing this with my brother and he said he uses the same towel a few times. He figures you are clean after a shower so the towel doesn't get dirty. Then why would you ever have to wash it is what I was thinking.
I can't use the same towel twice it grosses me out. How about you? Do you reuse the same towel after bathing. If so, how long before you wash it?
Do you have to use a fresh one every time as I do?

Thanks for reading.

Im happy enough to re use the towel, just as long as it isnt wet ..or even damp...but i only really use it a couple of times before its thrown into the wahing machine. There is nothing worse than picking up a towel to dry with,to find that its damp!!...Another pet hate here is using a twoel someone else has used,im selfish ..I like my own.

I don't use towels. I just air dry. I count my goosebumps to pass the time. Much more fun than a rub a dub, dub! LOL

All 4 of us (hubby, me and 4 kids) have separate towels and we use them for 3-4 days before we put it in the laundry. I grew up having a separate towel for myself. But when I was married, I was shocked to see that they all shared the same towel!!!!! I was really grossed out then. I had my own and was glad when we moved out. I made it clear to my husband that he wouldn't be sharing my towel and he would have to get separate ones for both of us.
He does slip up sometimes and uses one of the rest of our towels before the 3 days is up...and then I put it straight in the hamper especially when it's baby's towel he's used to wipe his face!

I use a fresh clean towel every time. LOL!! But if there was a towel emergency I might us it again. LOL!! but for me once is a towel's limit. LOL!!! I do see what your brother is saying but if you don't clean the towel after using it, it just feels wrong I guess that was how I was raised. LOl!!!

I'm with you sister. It does seem wrong. A clean body with a dirty used towel. I can't see how the towel isn't dirty after using it. I thought it was just me. Thanks for coming by hun.

I am one of those that thinks when you come out of the shower/bath, that since you are so squeaky clean, really, how dirty are you getting the towel. Just a few skin cells, I guess.
I only wash it after a few, not every time as I feel that it would waste hydro and soap.
Although, I think it is gross to share a towel with anyone else. So we all have our quirks, don't we?

We all sure do. Most people look at it they way you do but for some reason, I can't bring myself to use a towel again. I even tried today and no deal. Oh well, guess I'm quirky. LOL
Thanks for the response.

I will use a towel a few times before washing it. The reason you wash a towel is because after a while bacteria will start to grow on the towel from being wet and drying over and over again. A few uses is nothing to worry about, though. Some people think they need a clean towel each time they bathe and I say, to each his own. I think those people must do a lot of towel laundry, though.

I do a lot of towel laundry that's true. But I don't mind because I always have a fresh towel. Thanks for the response.

I use the same towel at least two or three times. I would consider it such a waste of energy and water if I washed all my towels after one use. I was in a resort in Florida and was so shocked. Housekeeping came around every morning with mountains of fresh towels and wanted to pick up the used towels.
I have also stayed in hotels especially in Europe where there are signs in the bathroom asking people to think about the environment and hang up the towels to indicate if you want to use them again and leave them on the floor if you wanted fresh ones.
I live in a condo building and since it is an older one we don't have separate meters for electricity and water. All the owners share the cost. In the last two years the water and hydro bills have gone up so much and therefore our condo fees have increased hugely while incomes have stayed the same.
We have had meetings about this and asked people to conserve but I guess ingrained habits die hard and people are willing to pay for it.

I wouldn't like sharing costs for this stuff with anyone else. That doesn't seem fair. In that case, I may consider changing my ways out of respect for my neighbors. But it would be a hard habit to break. Thanks for the response.

I use the same towel a few times. I think about 3 or 4. I don't think it gets very dirty, to be honest. Also, I read somewhere that you should even wear jeans 3 times before you wash them - washing things uses a lot of water, and we're pretty big on water conservation in our home. (Which is funny, because I think we live in one of the few cities that doesn't have water meters on the houses).

Howdy SkinnyC, yep I use my towel through a couple of showers or baths. The thing is I do not use a towel that someone else has used. everyone gets their own towel, and I know my fellas use each others towels if left in the bathroom, but I fold and hang mine up separate from theirs. About twice a week I go and gather dirty towels and replace with clean ones. The one I use to wrap my hair in after I wash it I might use through 3or 4 washings. LMAO.
I just hate all of that laundry it makes to use a clean one every single shower.

I don't like the laundry either but it is the lesser of 2 evils. I guess I'm weird when it comes to this.

I reuse my towel for about a week. Cuts down on the laundry and saves a lot of water!

You are a germaphobe. lol But that is okay I still love you. I use the same towel 3 days in a row before I toss it in the hamper. The only times I use fresh towels is during that one week a month when it doesn't matter how clean my rear is I still have that not so fresh feeling even after taking a shower.

Hi skinnychick,
I am the same as your brother.I use my towel for about 5 days before I give it a wash. It's only me using the towel and no one else, so this is why i find it okay to do this. Besides, I don't think I'd want to be sharing my towel anyway! I have about four different towels to use. So when one is "dirty" I just grab a clean one and wash the "dirty" one and fold it into the pile!

Sounds like a plan. I wish I could do that. I would have less laundry but I can't risk the germ factor. There has to be some germ or another that lives on used towels. Maybe not though- still it's in the back of my mind. Thanks for the response.

Both hubby and I use a different towel everytime we shower, it adds up to about 14 towels a week but it makes for peace of mind when you know the towel is clean.. I wouldn't use one twice.. This post reminded me of a towel that I saw in a mail order book once, It was white on one half and said in big letters, "Face" and the other half was brown and said in big letters, "Butt".. lol

Before I was living on my own I had to have a clean towel, but as I came to realize that dragging cloths to the laundry mat was annoying and time consuming I decided to make my towels last longer by reusing them. I do have to give it a smell first though:)

I can see where that would get annoying. I'm not so sure I would be using this many towels if I had to go to the laundry mat. In fact, I probably wouldn't be. Too lazy for that!! :)
The smell test is always good though. Thanks for the response.

I reuse the same towel for about a week. Five days usually. I'm the only one using it, I only use it after I shower, how dirty can it really be? It doesn't bother me, and if it's gross, or smells weird, I stop using it, wash it and in the mean time use another towel. I try to make sure that when it really needs cleaned it gets cleaned.

I reuse the same towel for at least a week at a time. I am not worried about it being dirty and as long as it doesn't smell, I'm good to go. Growing up I was always taught to use a clean towel each time I showered, but once I moved out I realized how much laundry that creates and what a waste of water that is! I have never been a person to worry about germs or anything like that, so it works for me.

I use the same towel for three uses. But I admit I am just like you in this regard. I love a clean, fresh, fluffy towel and would love to use one everytime I shower. But I have come realize that this is one area that would be pretty simple for me to help the environment and conserve water. It might be a very small thing, but if everyone in the world did one small thing a day to help the environment it could make a huge difference. It sounds silly but I see it as something to look forward too as well. I just love, 'fresh towel day'.

Where I grew up we had to hand-carry every drop of wash water from a spring half a block through the forest. Mum had 4 big wash tubs set up in a circle next to her hand-crank wringer and we had to keep bringing the water as fast as we could to change out the rinse water so that the clothes could get cleaned and the soap rinsed out.
That probably would have grossed you out too. But it predisposed me to consider a fresh clean towel a great luxury. I do not need a great luxury every day, though, and since I do not rub a dub dub with the towel, but pretty much just use it to keep from dripping, I have no problem using the towel over again for up to a week before washing it. But then I do use different towels for my face and hair.

Thanks for the response. I have never thought of a fresh towel as a luxury but in some parts of the world it really is. Thanks for sharing your story.

I would use the same towel for like 3 to 4 days before I change a new one. Wish I could use a fresh one each time I take a bath but counting the number of times I bathe a day minimum 3 times and if there's exercise or heavy work sweat then it can come up to 5 times a day I bathe. Can't imagine using 5 towels a day!!! LOL so I think I would just stick to one towel for 2 to 4 days

If I bathed that much, I don't think I would be switching towels. I shower once a day so it works for me. There are some days where I take a bath at night but I even change my towel then. I could see why you would reuse your towels.
