That is a good question can cats understand us,I dont think anyone actually knows. Sometimes I communicate with my cat by meowing at her,but mostly I communicate with her by saying Missy get down, Missy get out,Missy move, and Missy shut up along with other commands and words depending on what mood I am in and if she is pissing me off.

Yes and she will respond to you with a nice look that says 'Yea right.' and go about her own business. Cat's have such personality.

Yeah she gives off one of those mean looks, and then she will stick her tail in the air,and continue on with her business.

I've heard that cats only really meow for people, not other cats. They are trying to communicate with us ^__^
I meow at my cats all the time and usually they will meow back at me. They are so cute. Each one has a different meow. My girl's is high-pitched and dainty. My boy's doesn't really sound like a meow at all because I don't think he ever figured out how to do it right :P
Sometimes I just talk to them like I would a person and they look at me with their blank kitty faces and tell me to shut up and pet them!

I actually just talk to them normal. I have found that they understand me just fine. I have 3 cats total and 1 is very vocal with me and meows at me at least once a day. The other 2 mostly just use head jestures to let me know that they understand. I love it. Some of my friends have said that I am weird to talk to my pets like they are family but honestly my pets are part of my family. I dont know any other way to treat them.

I actually talk to them in my language. Although we don't 'speak' the same language, we somehow manage to communicate. They meow differently when they want different things. Guess it the tone and expression that matters. My mother speaks to my cats in our dialect and my cats understand her as well.
It's a little like talking to babies. Somehow the message just gets across. Cheers

Missy will jump up while i'm using the laptop and demand to be petted if she can reach the laptop. If i'm sitting beside my fiance or in a place where she can't get to me and the laptop she will just sit at my feet.
She likes to purr and meow, especially meow if your not listening.

Thats true cause she is very persistant and she wont stop until she gets the attention she wants or thinks she deserves.

Yeah I know its like she despises that the laptop gets more attention then she does, and she will let you know that by meowing at you,and she meows more if you try to ignore her.

Welcome to Mylot!
My cat has quite a vocabulary of meows, chirps, purrs and yowls...I'm trying to figure out whats on his little furry mind, but it's not easy! I talk to him, occasionally meow back, try to purr, use body language...whatever works! I figure tone of voice helps in various situations-a loud "NO" when you're trying to stop him doing something, petting and rewarding him when he does something you want..

I know my cats understand some of the words I say as well as the tone of how I say words. I got a black cat who likes to go outside. When I ask my black cat do you want to
go outside he knows what it means. They know what no means. They know what i love you means with the happy look they have. I can also say the work get along and they know it means to move. We have 5 cats.

i talk baby talk with my cat. he seems to understand because he responds back. so did my late cat. maybe they just respond to my voice and how it sounds..the feelings behind it...
i think it is similar to when u go to a foreign country...u respond to foreigners when u dont understand their language by their personality, feelings, how they represent themselves, voice, etc, like sign language....

I speak to my cats in English. I'm pretty sure they understand what they want to understand. Sometimes they meow back at me. I wouldn't meow at them as I have no idea what I'm saying to them. They never do answer me when I ask "what are you doing?" or "what was that noise?"

I think that a lot of it is in the tone of voice we use. I tend to talk in English, asking questions like "what do you want?" and "do you want to go out?". Obviously they don't understand, but I think that they can tell by the way I look at them and pay them attention that I am trying to communicate something.
Whenever I want to attract a cat's attention I make a kissing noise. Their ears stick up so I know they have heard me. Sometimes, they choose to ignore me and don't turn round. But that is a cat's prerogative isn't it!

I have always taken the same attitude as I do with small children - I speak plain English (or whatever language you speak).
Cats communicate in so many ways - you only have to pay attention. They are masters at body language - their eyes and tails can be extremely expressive.
When one meows at me, I call it by name, pick it up or give it a good stroke and if they continue to meow, I check the water and food dishes.
I consider myself lucky that they want to communicate (except the little one who wanders around the apartment meowing his head off apparently just to hear himself 'talk')
