Paying for preschool!

My husband and I live in a rural community about 6 or 7 miles from the local elementary school. I have 4 children, 2 of which have to start school, yet. I went to the school to inquire about signing my "next one" up for preschool and they told me there were still slots available, but it would cost me $800 to have her attend 4 days a week, 4 hours a day. Not only do I have to pay for her to attend, but I have to provide the transportation and a snack and 1 meal! I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel that preschool education is a very important pre-emptive to starting regular school for all kinds of reasons ie: physically, socially, etc. All children should be entitled to have this opportunity of education at such a young age without the cost involved. I know I could "at-home" preschool, which I did with my oldest, but fear I'm not as creative as I want to be, plus there isn't the social interaction with other children that I think is so important. We pay extremely high property taxes for our home, and would think this would entitle us to attend a public school program for free, or at least a LOT less than they're asking!

Do you have "Head Start" in your area. In Missouri, it is a preschool type program for lower income families and for childre who have special needs - I don't believe there is any cost to attend.

Thank you for your response! Yes, we do. My 2nd oldest attended through Head start and I enjoyed the program very much as did she. It was explained to me by Head Start that because we live in such a rural area, that the program is only available at our local school if there is enough attendance. It doesn't look like there will be enough children in our area this coming fall. They may or may not have buses that will come out here to get her, and my husband and I only have one car and he just started a new job. If they decide they could pick her up, she may be driven 20 miles or more one way to get to the closest Head Start Program that would be available.:-(
