I have neighbors that live down the street
a few houses from me that have ? amount of cats!
They have males that haven't been neutered
and females that haven't been spayed
and kittens...always new kittens..
I just heard that one of the kids brought
home another female cat!!!!!
Most are pretty scroungy looking
and it's not uncommon to see a dead
cat that has been hit by a car...
I know the neighbors next to them
have complained but nothing has changed.
Each week I buy an 10lb bag of cat food
and fill a self feeder
( actually for sheep or goats but works great)
that I have hung from a tree in the woods way
down behind our houses. This way I may lure
the cats away from the road and help to
feed the poor things..Each week it's empty
What approach would you take?

The most cats I have ever had at one time was four and they had all been neutered and spayed. I have two at the present moment. These cats will end up with a lot of health problems also as they are probably interbreeding and I suspect the kittens are still kittens having kittens themselves. Its fantastic that you feed them, but why should you have to and by feeding them when the neighbour who has complained manages to get a visit to them from animal welfare they will look well feed and no action will be taken. These cats need loving caring homes or at least the ones they have they should be made to get neutered and spayed. Ellie :D

Thanks for sharing Oreo. I don't think it is the numbers rather than the looking after them correctly that matters. If Raydene bless didn't feed them they probably would be fed that well and these people don't neuter or spay. Your friend sounds delightful having all these places for them and special shelvevs. Mine have to find their own places. Ellie :D

Ellie you said it correctly.
It is the fact that they get
more when they do not take the money to
make sure no more are born.
I also doubt they get shots!
Oreo, I know some cat and dog people like
your friends..but their animals are
their children ( they were never blessed
with the human ones)!

I hate to say this but if thats out of control and bothering neighbors. Itd be best to call animal control. Hopefully they would give thme a chance to staighten up their mess first time. You can call and see what they would do about it before you report it is what I would do!I was watching oprah and there is a such thing as animal hoarding. If you can believe it! Crazy huh!?

Honey
I have all I can do
to mind my business
so I do what I can
with my bag of feed weekly
and if animal control is
called the cats will be taken
away to be put down and what
in the world would that accomplish!
I believe the poor creatures have a right
to live...I could never do that..It not like
other places..these small towns don't have resources
to care for these animals..so they would die!

I think one is enough but i have seen many people have more than one cat, it depends how much you love to animal and how much you effort. It is equally painful when cat lives you and stay with other person, this has happened to me after that i have lost interest in cats

I used to know someone who had 22 cats. But they were responsible owners, though. The people you describe don't sound responsible. I would call ASPCA on them for neglect. Noone should have that many pets and not take care of them. That's another form of animal abuse! If ASPCA doesn't work, call the local news station.

Also wanted to add that *YOU* (and the rest of the neighborhood) should not be responsible for taking care of them - the owners should.

I agree with OreoCookie3. Animal hoarding is really a dangerous mental illness for both human and animal. It's really good of you to help feed the cats but I think - if you're willing to - the root of the problem lies with the mental state of the family. And they need help! Perhaps you could ask the local vet for advice. I mean, psychological advice for the people. And as for the cats, I do believe vets or shelters sometimes have policies for neutering stray cats for free or at great discounts. I think a really important step would be to get the cats neutered and stop the problem from expanding, literally.

here in montreal there is a bi-law two cats per household, but some people have more. I heard in the usa it is the same in some places. If you want you can call your local government body, but those cats would probably be sent to the pound though.

Depends on how much space and how much time you have. My SIL had 32 at one time all on different diets and some housed in different rooms.
We had 6 we lost in a house fire on MLK day and it wasn't long before we were looking for more to give a good home to. We always have several barn cats but they are not socialable so you rarely get near them.

Those people are harming the cats rather than helping them. They should either get the cats fixed or give them away to people who live quite a distance. They are also neglecting these cats who would have been happy living wild or in several nice homes. You should call the animal control people and they will take care of the problem. You can tell the cats are not getting enough to eat by the way your feeder is empty.

It is very nice what you do for those poor cats. They are defeniatly beig neglected at their "home." Those people need to get their animals neutered and spayed. Have their other neighbors complained to the right people? A local animal shelter or the animal control?
We own 7 cats (all spayed and neutered) and we take very good care of them. We always rescued our animals from shlters or off the streets, we never buy them off breeders. We do it because it helps the animals more. Sounds like your neighbors might be trying to do that too, but are doing a very poor job of it!
You think you or anyone else can talk them into getting the animals fixed??

Hi raydene! Bless your soul for taking pity on those poor cats dear friend! Maybe, if you can report them to animal welfare? Those neighbors of yours should be responsible for the feeding of their cats and not just let them out on the streets to scavenge for food. Just my thoughts dear friend. Take care and have a nice day!

I would have to say call the humain society. The problem is only going to get worse, given the number of kittens a cat can have in a year.
And I suspect a lot of those cats may be feral. It's not fair to leave them in a condition like that where you end up with more and more cats. These people need help, and if you act now, you may be able to help some of those cats find good homes.
And if these people are getting more cats the problem is going to get worse fast. Sooner or latter, those cats will get something, and those people will have a lot of sick cats.
There is no way they can look after so many.

Thank you so much for caring about these poor cats. Their people are irresponsible at best and mentally ill at worst. Is it at all possible that you could sneak some away for neutering? I think you should call them and explain that the cats are suffering from this neglect. You are an angel to care for them.

My husband is a cat lover. He has always had multiple cats in the house. Usually up to maybe half a dozen or so. We now have 3 cats in our home and one dog. In my opinion that is about five cats too many and never enough dogs. Maybe two dogs maximum would be nice. My aunt was a cat lady. She had 7 kids and a husband, two dogs, a parakeet, and 23 cats at one moment in time. Many of her cats were inbred and there was always a litter of kittens somewhere in the house in a drawer or closet. The smell is enough to kill anyone in our home, no matter how much I clean I can't get away from it, and I am allergic but invariably I wake up with cats around my head as they talk to my husband about breakfast. I am allergic so of course this plays havoc with my sinuses. You can't change a cat lover, apparently.

it will not bothered iof how many animal you can keep as long you have your own fam & great place for them & vaccine them, but those kind of people need to give them a lesson how to deal thier animal specially they dont have any vaccine & they already got a problem from the neigbor.

I watch alot of the houston animal control on sky, there are always people like your neighbour that have loads of cats, some even have dogs aswell. The people that usually tend to hoard all these cats are probably in their 70's it starts off with a couple but because they don't get the male cats neutered it soon becomes a problem.
Some of the conditions that these cats live in is awful not much fun for her either. The only trouble is by reporting it to the animal control people is that they will probably take it to the court, depends how bad it is she will probably just get a fine, some people do get sent to prison for it.
i still think for the animals and their well fair that you should do something about it, it could get a whole lot worse if nothing is done about it. Let us know how you get on with it.

Do you live down the street from my in laws?
I swear this sounds just like them.
I would call the ASPCA. Having that many animals and not bringing them to a vet is a form of abuse.
Short of that, there's not much you can do. If they're anything like my in laws, they won't see reason. They'll just think you're rude for trying to tell them what to do.
Good luck. I hope something can be done.
