Why do you like to read in the first place?

Since we're all into reading here, I was just wondering, what keeps us reading? Especially when it seems so much easier these days to just turn on the TV or plug into your MP3 player, or just surf around on the internet. You'd think good old traditional books will be out of business by now! (I'm not talking about e-books). So what keeps your interest - what pushes you out the door and into the bookshop these days? What do good old paper books give us that TV, internet, computer games etc don't?

I like reading because from every book i read i take something completly new. Be it an outlook on something or really powerful themes there is something i take from reading books.

I agree with you. Also, I love reading because there will be new things or vocabulary to learn with just reading a book.

I actually enjoy the feel of a book in my hand. I like flipping the pages and becomeing totally engrossed in what I am reading. I like many forms of entertainment, but nothing will ever replace for me time well spent with a good book.

I like to read because I can get so much information through reading.
Unlike any other forms of acquiring information, in reading I can thoroughly understand the insights that the authors want to convey. For example, if there are terms or phrases that I do not understand, I can get a dictionary to look for the meaning or I can read the selection over and over again so that I will get the meaning exactly as what the authors would like to convey.

I love to read. I will read a magazine, a book, or even the back of a cereal box. It's as though I have to keep my eyes and brain busy.
One reason I love to read in the first place is because I can place myself as another person in that book...I'm the observer. I also learn about places and people and things that I would otherwise not have the opportunity.
My interests range from biographies to rural Amish families to Little House on the Prairie to a classic such as Jane Eyre.
The last time I went to a bookstore, I bought Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. I read it because I need to start eating healthier and wanted to find out how I can do this and not wind up being hungry again in just a few hours. I buy books at thrift stores, garage sales, and small fund raisers.
There is something about a book that you cannot get with an e-book and that is the pleasure of being able to curl up on the couch with it, take it camping with you (I had Willie Nelson as my book companion with me on my camping trip), take it to the doctor's office (as there can be a long wait there), and fall asleep with it.
I love to turn the pages in anticipation of what is going to happen on the next page. I can also actually see the progress I'm making when I place my bookmark in between the pages.
Plain and simple, I love to read.

Books give me a lot deeper understanding of things than a fast paced tv show. When reading you can take it in in your own tempo and you can read parts several times. I also like to be able to use my imagination a bit more. When I read I make up imagery in my mind instead of getting it served on tv. I also like how the books feel and smell and look. I liketo have them displayed in my home. I also like reading in bed. There a book is easier than tv or a laptop.

I like to read books because I enjoy learning and I feel that watching television doesn't teach me much.. sure I can get information about current events, I guess. I like going to the library and getting lost in a good book and being that much more knowledgeable on the subject when I leave.

Philosophy and religion. It's a different experience when you sit down with a book. You have the author's words and the way they paint a story or an idea out, but you have your own images. Your imagination. Visualization is a very good tool.
You immerse yourself in a book, you can relate to the author, and you feel like they are speaking to you.
Somes the internet lacks quality..

I love to get relax with a book and a cup of coffee in my spare time because it is not stressful. Sometimes internet, tv, movies and ect gets boring.... I just want a nice time all alone with my favorite book and snuggle up and get comfortable.
