And the rockets soared

I just got back from the neatest thing. My daughter had joined a club earlier this year through school and they built a rocket. Not just any rocket this was at least 6 feet tall, and when they shot it off it flew at least a mile up in the air. In Sheboygan WI once a year they go down by the coast guard station and shoot off these rockets that were all made by 4th grade through 12th grade students. There were tons of people coming and going all day. The kids learn a lot agout G force and other things I have no idea about. They have to try some type of experiment with their rocket, by having a payload that they develope a theory about. My daughters group, who were all very young, put a sharpie in a bottle to see what type of marks it would leave on the bottle when it flew. There were people who had video cameras in their rocket and even someone flew an egg. This is an event sponsered by local businesses and groups. I think it is great that as adults we foster this type of creativity in our children. What do you think.

Super cool! I know I personally don't know anything about G force either. I do think this type of activity is so great for kids. It sounds like a wonderful group where they can really let their imagination along with creativity grow and they can then learn from experience when they actually put something to the test. I know they sure didn't have things like this available to me as a child but when I was around 4+ years old and up til probably about 9 or 10 my dad would take me out with my brother when he was old enough and he would fly planes on a string in a circle by turning around. It was probably like radio controlled today without the radio control. I also remember when I was on the older of those years we probably let a few go and then retrieved them. For some reason I really recall the kite flying as a child a lot as well. I can remember "holding" that spindle. Not to mention the running. I of course wasn't full grown and really ran my heart out (for the fun of it) and would get tired of course but the joy of the flying kite sure was fun. We never had a plain old kite kit. I am not sure they even made them in the earlier seventies. My dad would make them. He made them box shaped and almost diamond shaped like todays and with I guess plastic and I remember him spray painting them. I remember one was silver in color and made like todays diamond shaped ones. I also remember how we would make tails. I bet I got to help with that some. I of course don't remember that much but I definately remember the flying. Makes Me think I should get out there and make My kids run some! For My entertainment. ha ha. I definately remember the water rockets We launched then to and a few times doing that with my own kids too. I of course never got many kites in the air with My own kids maybe cause they were bought. Or I didn't know enough about wind to pick the right days to fly? Well purplelaurii77 thanks for sharing in Your Daughters club activities. Even My kids don't participate in a club like that nor have I heard of one. But when My son was little he was a bear scout and made a rain gutter ragata "boat" and of course several pine wood derby cars. I can't say the girl scouts have done much in that respect however My Daughter is into Venture scouting now for the 14-21 age groups for co ed scouting (sponsored by or started by the boy scouts) and My Husband is a Leader so maybe if I mention it They might consider additional activities while They camp that are out there like these. I bet Your Daughter will remember this day and others like it for Her lifetime. God Blesses!

Yeah well those days are long gone by.... I guess the camping isn't but the feeding the ducks and... and.... and... I think it's going to be a long wait for the kids to talk to me now unless I go buy that water rocket make or buy that kite and force them to run it for Me. I'll think about it for a while and try to plan one of those things for the coming week and see if I can accomplish it! Thanks and I am glad Your Daughter is doing something that eventually involves the whole family too. God Blesses!

The kids must've been so excited! To see their hard work actually take off and fly! Wish they'd had things like that when I was in school. Hands-on learning is the best! What kind of marks did the sharpie leave, or don't you know the results yet? That's interesting and good that they thought of doing that.

I do not know what kind of marks were left. The kids will have another closing meeting this coming week and they will find out this kind of information. The kids as well as the adults were excited. They were making the countdown just like when the NASA spaceships are shot. I agree I wish they had something like this when I was young... Maybe I would have been an astronaut when I grew up
