Do you pick your own gifts?

So tomorrow is Mother's Day and I picked out my gift. I purchased at work, brought it home and my boyfriend will give it to my son to give to me. He unwittingly bought me a pair of Jessica Simpson sunglasses which I will not only act surprised to receive, but will treasure and use daily. The bottom line is that neither he nor my boyfriend really know what to get me, so the ultimate decision is mine. Do you pick out your own gifts or do you let your children or significant other pick them out for you?

yes I do because my son always forgets mothers day and I am a widow so I go and pick out something that I like and am fine with it. My son pays all the rent and the utilities and is generally broke by now til the middle of' the month so I do not fault him at all. He gifts me at other times so all is right with me.

Thats nice that you have someone that can help you out financially the way that your son does. Must be a burden off your mind.

Tee hee KB, that's the way to do it! Better than getting something that you don't want and them uselessly buying something you don't want. If it is my birthday or it is coming up soon, then I so 'ooooohhhh wouldn't that be nice, I'd like that for my birthday' - you know, nothing subtle, that never works! Good idea of yours! Have a wonderful day and enjoy your sunglasses.

I like how you used Yorkies avatar in your discussions without having to change your own. Great idea. I will enjoy my sunglasses. Its nice to have a good pair. Especially here in Phoenix. Happy Mothers Day to you.

I usually do. It's easier if my hubby gives me the cash to buy something I really want as opposed to buying something I might not like if he chose it.

I really think thats the best way to do it. That way there is no time, energy or money wasted.

Well we had our Mothers day back in March, my hubby always picks my gifts out for me and takes the children with him. He is pretty good as he knows what I like and knows that I do not think that much money should be spent!! So they got me a beautiful bunch of pink tulips and a bottle of Baileys! Both of the things that I like. It was quite funny though as I overheard my two boys talking and the 7 year old said to his 6 year old brother that he did not think that they should buy me flowers anymore as I just let them die!! I had to explain to him then that this is what happens to cut flowers.

If my family wanted to buy me a gift, usually I asked them to bring me with them, specially if they wanted to buy me clothes. Cause my taste of color is so different than theirs , usually they bought me wrong color or pattern clothes. If it was shoes or belt, I am not picky about that. But if they wanted to bought me books, I just asked them to give me the money and let me choose myself cause they had no idea what kind and author I love to read.

My family really has no idea either, thats why this year, I bought it myself, gave it to my boyfriend and he gave it to my son to give to me. I acted all surprised. LOL.

Sun glasses are what I got also, but its what I wanted. If it were me I would have bought a cheap pair, but I was able to get a really nice pair of Jessica Simpsons this year. I used to live in Northern California. Gosh I miss it.

My daughter got me a couple of things for Mother's Day even though i told her she did not have to get me anything. She had me to write her out some things that I wanted or needed to make sure I got something that would be useful to me. I think that is the best way to do it so she does not waste her time or her money on something that I really could not use or need.

I agree. Why get something that you can't benefit from? I'd rather get something I want or need.

yes friend...i fully agree with you and your views. You know what... children can be moulded in any way you want.I f you teach them what to spend and how to spend rightly it would really be very helpful. Now for the kids Mothers day is really very special because mothers are special and exclusive.I feel that you have done the right thing in getting the gifts which are useful to you. have a nice day

I post things I might want on Amazon, but mostly my family know to give me gift cards to craft places or bead shops. This last year I told my sister that if they could each give me a $10 gift certificate to the shoe place I wanted to get new shoes at I'd be thrilled. For Christmas I got $100 certificate from them. I was beyond thrilled! I was floored! for only another $40 dollars, I got my new shoes!!!

LOL!! These were the first new shoes I've had since I retired in 2005. I don't wear most normal shoes, I have so many problems with my feet. My foot doctor praised my shoe choice.

Don't say the word "shoes"! LOL. Working in the womens shoe department, do you know that the other day I realized I had bought 16 pair in three months?

I don't pick out my own gifts. My kids have given me some pretty crazy gifts when they were younger and they were so proud of them. I wore the gawdy jewlery and displayed the cheap knicknacks and their artwork. I still have them all and I cherish them all. This year we all went out to breakfast. It was time spent together. One of my daughters could not resist a gift and bought me a book on mothers and daughters and wrote me the most beautiful letter. I dont like people spending a lot of money on me that they don't have or even if they have it.....just one of my many hang-ups, I guess. I dated a very wealthy man for several years and he finally "got it". I would get very upset when he bought me expensive gifts. One year for xmas, he wrote me a 3 page letter pouring his heart out. It was the best and most memorable gift I have from him.

For my birthday and Christmas (which are both in December, but I usually get separate gifts depending on their nature/cost), if I know there is something that I want in advance, then I will let my family/friends/boyfriend know and they'll either work together to get one gift, or they will get the small things I requested. If there's nothing in particular that I desire, I'm happy to let them choose. My loved ones know me well, and they also know that if they can't find anything, I don't expect anything. =) Last year, my mum bought 2 tickets to a music festival for my boyfriend and I for my birthday, and it was the greatest present, we had an awesome time =)

I know other people whose birthdays are in December, including my stepmother and my boyfriend. They always complain that people throw Christmas and their birthdays together and they feel they are cheated. LOL.

Lol yeah, I have a heap of friends whose birthdays fall in December and most of them feel the same way. I think it might have bothered me as a child if people just got one present and chose one of the dates to give it to me on (or worse: between the two, on a day that isn't even special =P), but now I don't mind if I get one thing or nothing really =) As long as the people who matter don't forget me altogether. =D

Oh no I have never picked my own gift. Mothers Day was actually in March this year in UK and I had a lovely bouquet arrived and an amazing collage photo picture of photos of all of us in a frame from one daughter and a pair of shoes from the other, both of which I loved. In fact was only wearing the shoes yesterday. My son is too small so the girls will go out and pick something for him to get me but he will make his own card and colour in which I treasure. One year the girls got me bulb daffodils in a large pot and they come up every year so it is always a reminder of that gift. Ellie :D

I love daffodils, they are one of my all time favorite flowers. I remember them from the movie Dr. Zhivago and they are always an indication of spring. Bright and cheery.

Yes, my husband did it again. Not every time, but most of the time I end up picking my own gift for all occasions. I guess it comes with me not always approving of every one he does give me, because us women can be kinda moody at times. And men really have a hard time keeping track.

I guess I would if I was a mother. but, i'm not. but the reason why I think that I would, is because that nobody knows how i feel about what I like and don't like. so, yes, I would choose my own products, or gifts if some one was going to give me the money. in fact, that's how I'd prefer to get a gift. is for someone to give me the money.

As life has progressed I have definitely found it advantageous to pick out my own gifts rather than receive something I really can't use.
