What Is The Point Of Doing A Discussion Search?

I have just posted a discussion re being brave having injections and before I posted I went into discussion search, full search not just tabs to see if there were any and it came up a blank. I posted discussion and there were 4 or 5 similar, granted one was four months ago but it was asking a similar thing.
Have you experienced this when posting a discussion?

Hello ellie. I've seen this happening a lot of times. It might be coincidence, or it might just be 'too coincidental'. Like for instance, I've started some topics and after a day or just a few hours, I would see right about the same kind of discussion being made too. I just take the benefit of the doubt and thinking it is just coincidental that the user happens to think around the same topic as well.
As for my own searches, I sometimes type in some forms of search and I use the function and I would see a couple of the same topics and sometimes even the same title. ...that says a lot already. So which do I answer then..ha!!
Have a good one there..;)

Thanks Zed, I definately typed in searching for an already started discussion and nothing was revealed and then the minute I posted discussion one came up from about four months ago and another unrelated but to do with diebetes injections rather than normal ones. I just thought then what was the point in doing the search in the first place. I haven't used it like you have to search to anwser one on a topic though. Thanks for shaing your thoughts on this. The discussion search helps you to find out if there is already a current discussion with the exact same topic! It uses keywords to find the other discussions, so if you type in one or two keywords, it may not find any other discussions with those keywords! Once you type a new discussion and post it, the search engine will use every word in the discussion, not just the new keywords, and it may find some that are similar to, but not exactly the same, as your new discussion! It is okay and not really a problem!

Yes Ellie,I have and felt weird since the title was almost the same and didn't want anyone thinking i was copying from that person even though it was a year ago..I try to think of things and if there is something close to it,you would think it would show it so you shouldn't have to feel this way.
But it got good comments and maybe my friends never saw the other one.LOL
Guess you are off to sleep soon..Huggs and sweet dreams!

That is very astute of you Rosekitty I had in fact just said goodnight to someone before seeing this response. I am not even gonna bother doing a search anymore as it never shows until you've posted anyway and most of my discussion seem pretty first timish anyways. Thanks for the response and thanks for the hugs, sweet dreams I certainly hope they'll be. Have a good day. Ellie :D

yes I did, it is just crazy, the discussions are going to overlap, there are just so many things that can be talked about. But you know you should bring that up to the admin, it is impossible not to have discussions overlap.

Hi Winterose, yes I will contact admin but the last time I contacted them it took me nearly three weeks to get a response which is a bit ridiculous too really. It is wasting peoples time too when they spend time searching, then post only to find something similar. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

I so agree with you ellie. Yesterday I was responding as usual and I wasn't sure if a post I responded to was actually sent. I entered the title of the post and got a page that said it was a bad request so I deleted the last part leaving a couple of words. It brought up about 15 discussions on that subject, all between 4 and 12 months old but not the one I was looking for. I had even gone to the user's profile who posted it and searched through "discussions I started" with no luck. I went to my own profile and searched "discussions I've responded to" with no luck. I have simply not been able to find this discussion on myLot again.

I earlier today rather than reply from email notification on your one about UFO's wanted to find your discussion and I went into discussion my friends had started and couldn't find, done a search and couldn't find and eventually went into frinds list found you and wwent into discussions stared before I could actually respond as I wanted to go in a read link first before responding. So it is a bit crazy eh! Ellie :D

Correct, most of the time, it's time consuming and instead of accomplishing more post we will end up to less because of that inaccuracy! maybe, they will notice that flaw and do something to improve the system!

I have experienced the same thing. Unless you put in the exact title most of the time its not going to show similar discussions. Depends on how you put it in your search. It doesn't matter though. People will answer to the same discussion a hundred times if they are so inclined. Smile.

Hi KB, It makes me wonder whether I should actually waste time bothering to search if this is the case but always feel I ought to just in case someone else has posted. Like you say thougb people will still respond, I have responded to one discussion of someone elses and seen a similar underneath it and posted there also so I don't suppose it really matters eh! Ellie :D
P.S I have just sent you some daffs for MD as you said you liked them on that post. Enjoy. Ellie :D

Yes, ellie, I have had that happen several times. I don't use the discussion search anymore because I can never rely on it. I don't understand why that happens, but it does...all the time.
If I don't see a discussion similar by page 10 in the discussion lists, I will just go ahead and post mine and hope for the best. Not that I post many new ones, but it would be nice if it wasn't already out there recently.
Maybe Mylot will add this glitch to their long list of things to work on. Ha, like that will happen soon.

yes I don't think the discussion search
really works as afterwards I found a discussion
that was almost exactly like mine and I did
not get evenone response whereas I got 77 from
a different discussion. Mylot needs a better
method than that.

Hi Hatley, It doesn't appear to work as the searches I have done included full text not just tags and even then nothing showed up until I had actually posted and there it was. Quite frustrating really. I am not going to bother doing a search from now on I will just post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Ellie :D

Yeah, sometimes that happens to me. I think no one must have posted about it, but then it shows up after I post it. I don't care too much though, unless my discussion was posted on the same day as one at the bottom. Sometimes it comes in handy when I'm actually trying to find a discussion on something I'm interested in.

Hi AmbiePam, Its really strange that you do a search and nothing comes up and then once posted there it is. No I guess it is not too much of a problem unless like you say it was posted the same day. I suppose yes it could be a help sometimes too because people posting on the other would spot yours beneath where they have posted and maybe answer to that one too. I have done that sometimes myself. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Ellie :D

Same here all the trouble to post and some one has already done it,I dont think Discussion search is any good? There should be another way to stop multipal postings they are boring same over and over again. We have to hope mylot will come up with some thing!!!!

Hi Gollywog, It does make me wonder whether I should even bother to do a search to begin with as it doesn't seem to do anything other than waste my time. I could have responded to a couple of discussions whilst doing the search before placing my own. Perhaps myLot will but we haven't heard from Crash lately to put our ideas and questions to. Maybe I'll contact them and asked why this happens. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. Ellie :D
