"Interest Rankings" - How Are They Calculated?

Does anyone here have any idea how myLot came up with their method of ranking members by the different interests? I'm pretty sure it isn't based just on how often a particular member posts in a particular interest but I can' figure out how else it could be done. Is it by that much maligned star rating? If so, how is that fair because it's not about how often you start or respond to discussions in a certain interest or how knowledgeable you are in a particular subject but more by whether others here agree with you or not. Does anybody here know how these rankings are figured?

I'm not sure how the rankings are figured, but I think it has something to do with how many + ratings you get in ratio to the number of people listed in that catagory.

That sounds right, especially based on my own experiences. Should I test if out by posting a bunch of new discussions alternating between "I love McCain" , "Obama is a Muslim", "Obama is a racist", "Obama is anti-American" and "Universal health care means socialized medicine" and see if my ranking improves?

Hey, it's your ranking! I guess you could test it if you want.

That is what I have notice too. Lately I've seen discussion about star rating problems that arouse my curiosity. I notice that both star and interest rating are somewhat misleading to that particular interest.
Star rating are general over all rating somewhat like "Hey! I'm a expert blogger what can I do with your leaking faucet", not that he don't now it but the reader/viewer would take her word for it because of that blue star.
The same thing with the interest ranking, that show how many post he did in that particular interest, or create one, but its all "I dont know thing", would you take him/her as on top leaderboard.
There maybe so many here that could distinguish it, how many are they?

i don't think that interest ranking related with star ranking, my dear friend. but from i ever read before when mylot starting idea about interest ranking, interest ranking will show us how often we drop any response or discussion within those kind interest.
after all, i still don't understand either what the use of interest ranking in here and the reason why mylot put it in their feature in here?

i have really no clear idea about how they are calculated. actually i think it also depends on how you are again rated in your discussions here under that category. its only my guess.i also think no of posting sometimes determines the ranking.

Hello anniepa!
I don't really KNOW how interest rankings are calculated, but I have some idea based on observations and experiments.
It is not dependent, directly, on your star number at all, but there IS a correlation in the sense that if you are rated negative, it will not only affect your ranking in that interest area but also the star rating.
When you start a discussion under your own newly created interest category, you are ranked number one in that interest category, provided at least one user rates you. Now other users will respond and their ranking will also depend if they are rated or not. Their ranking, too, will only appear if they are rated.
Now, assume that you start a discussion under this new interest category and people respond and every one is positively rated, you will be ranked number 1, the first responder, if rated first, will be ranked 2nd and so on and so forth. If, however, you rate second responder first, then second responder will get 2nd position on leader board.
This is what I have seen on discussions where people started new interest categories. I would, thus, assume that same methodology is applied to interest areas which already exist. So, it is a combination of your overall participation and then getting rated. If you are rated positively for all your inputs and you have many inputs, your ranking will be among the top on leaderboard.

You are not doomed to be at the bottom anniepa, even though that may seem to be true at this point given how people rate others negative just because of difference of opinion. Neither star nor interest rating are true measure of someone's value here. I, personally, don't care but I still see it as unfair when others are attacked through negative rating campaigns just for their opinions.
Why I don't care, simply because, as I said before, it's not a true measure. You would probably have seen people knowing nothing or little about economics, politics or some religion but they still have higher rank than those who not only have in depth knowledge of affairs in these fields but participate heavily in them too. People who speak their mind more honestly, frankly and openly have lesser star rating and interest ranking than those who are tactful and diplomatic whether or not they know about things they are dealing with.
