What do you do in waiting rooms?

Apart from the obvious answer of 'wait', how do you pass the time. Do you read the tatty magazines that are on the table in the middle of the room, watch the re-runs showing on the telly or do you stare at your thumbs as they busy themselves with twiddling? Maybe you like to look at all the other people who are waiting. Do you ever look up from what you are doing and see someone else quickly look back at their magazine, trying to hide the fact they were watching you waiting? I think I actually do a combination of all of the above! What about you?

Yep, gum, I usually give my chewy a real workout in the waiting room, I think it stops my jaw from clenching from my impatience of waiting, LOL! Do you ever do the crossword while you're waiting?

I like crosswords, but I don't think I could concentrate enough in the waiting room to do one. I don't chat much either, but it is nice to look around sometimes.

I usually find someone to talk to. I break ice pretty well, and before you know it I will be in conversation with the person sitting next to me. Or if it does seem to be a quiet solemn atmosphere I will read what you call the tatty magazines, and if I catch someone watching me wait I will smile and hope for a conversation LMAO

So you're one of the chatty one's. If we we're in the waiting room together, I would probably see you start smiling at me, so I'd duck back into my magazine, occasionally peeking out to see if you we're still looking, LOL! I actually don't find it easy having a conversation in a waiting room, I don't know why that is!

I would grab a magazine and flip through the pages. Otherwise, I would reach out for my mobile phone and play a couple of games to pass time. Sometimes I would even grab those magazines that I've just read and flip through the pages again just to past time.

Playing games on the mobile phone seems to be a popular thing. As for the mags, there's only so many times you can look through them, and a lot are all pretty much the same.

hello muscare, i rarely go to a hospital or any medical facility coz it makes me sad i feel it is a place where i see pain and just rare happiness. anyway, to answer your question, i will either read the magazine if i have my ipod with me i will just listen to it while looking around and see how other's are. i will roam around the area just to lessen the boredom and the feeling of worry inside me - im a worrier so it is not easy for me to be there or i will be in the ICU in an instant LOL if i have someone with me, i will just talk to him or i will just hush and hope that all is well inside that close room. btw, my husband will tear up all his finger nails coz of the boredom and stress combine, i hate it but that's how he handles it so be it grrrrrr.... takecare!

Medical waiting rooms are definitely places I avoid as much as possible, but sometimes it can't be helped. You like to look around to see how others are? That would probably mean that when I came out from hiding behind my magazine, I'd see you looking at me, LOL! I also tend to be a worrier, and there doesn't need to be a good reason, just being in the doctors waiting room is enough. Hubby tears up his finger nails? Is that with his teeth? I nibble mine a bit when I'm feeling anxious.

Ok,jairgirl, I'll leave my nails alone just because you asked me so nicely, LOL! I seem to go through stages where they grow really well, and other times my nails are virtually non existent. Oh, well, I'll keep working on it.

Hi muscare, I usually sit there, look at the television set for a couple of minutes to see if there is anything of interest showing. If not I then reach into my pocket...and pill out my cell phone! I usually start playing games on it, looking up occasionally to actually see other people looking at me but yet pretending not to watch. But, sometimes I get bored playing the games on my phone. I have no choice though cause there is nothing better to do while waiting...

Most times there is something boring on the telly, so playing games on your cell phone is a great way to pass the time. So when you 'catch' someone looking at you, do you keep looking at them, or go back to your game?

They might just be curious about what game is keeping you so interested, LOL!

I usually look at them for a few seconds, think "what's so interesting over here?" and then go back to my game

I usually read a magazine if I can find one that is somewhat interesting. Or in most cases I will watch TV if they have one. Sometimes they have stuff I'm not interested in on, so I will go back to the magazine or paper if available.

That can be the hard thing, finding a magazine that's interesting. As for the tv, I was in a waiting room the other day, and there was a kids show on! No kids in the room! So yeah, back to the mag.

usually if my mom has to go for any reason,i end up being there at least 4 hours minimum..i pretty much end up reading every single magazine in that room. if it goes over 4 hours,i just tell them to call me when she's ready-i'm not too far from there.

Well that's not going to help time go any quicker if there are certain magazines that aren't as easy to read or get into.

Gee, four hours is a very long time to wait. You've obviously got a heap more patience than I have. In that length of time, you'd never miss anything in the magazines!

I will read magazines, a book because I like to have a book in my bag. Or look at people around me, I actually enjoy doing that. Like to see different expression on their face.

Maybe that is why I often forget my novel, as I don't have a handbag to put it in. If I take my wife with me, I could use hers, but then if she's with me, I'm more incline to talk to her. I'm not sure what expression I have in waiting rooms, probably a mix between boredom, worry and annoyance, LOL!

I usually read the magazines. Doctor's offices usually have pretty good ones. The exception is the car dealer; they usually have some kind of auto mag stuff around that I am not interested in.
@muscare (3068)

Yeah, I know what you mean about car dealerships. When I book my car in for a service, I tend to go for a wander, rather than wait in their waiting room reading those auto mags!

You might get a false interpretation of a person in a waiting room, I know I'm a much more nervous person when I'm waiting, especially at the doctors or the dentist!

in the waiting room my best companion is my cell phone.i m a game freak so it usually aint boring as long as the seats are good and comfortable coz i m engrossed in my games.also i got gprs activated in my cell so i get the recent news and i can check my mails and stuff .its really cool.its fun at times looking at people and observe them what they do wen gettting bored.the best part is when some beautiful girl is sitting right in front....the time just flies reminding of einstein's theory of relativity..

Sounds like you use most of the features of your mobile phone. Playing games would certainly be a good one for passing the time. As for the beautiful girl, that may work for me, unless my wife catches me checking her out, LOL!

I am a quiet person when I don't know anybody so I usually read. I always have a book with me. If I forgot my book, I write. If both are none, I read anything on the table but I seldom start a conversation with fellows in the waiting room. They talk to me and I will entertain them but I am more on just a listener than a chatter. If in a bus station which there is no magazines or any place I could have the chance to read or write, I play with my cellphone or I walk around. Anything I would do just to make the time pass, but not sleep. It's a no-no to me in public places. Have a great day! Take care =)

Same with me, I don't start conversations with people I don't know. I'm just not comfortable with that. I probably should use the features on my cellphone more, to pass the time when I can't do anything else, and I also agree with your thought on sleeping in public. I couldn't relax enough in the first place anyway!

I usually read magazines or books. I usually have a book of sudoku with me and I answer it while waiting. Or sometimes, I just text my friends or play with my psp.

I never got into the sudoku, but I love cryptic crosswords, and they come in handy sized books that could just about fit into my pocket, so maybe I should carry that around with me. A psp has got to be great for passing the time.

You like to talk, which passes the time well. Catching up with your texting is also a good time killer, and a pretty good distraction as well.

It depends on the waiting room I'm waiting in. When my dad was in the hospital ( just a few days ago ) I was stuck in the waiting room for an hour waiting for him to be set up in a different bedroom. My sister was with me but even though I had her to converse with, we both just sat there. I played with my phone while she read magazines. Fortunately they don't just have those health or house/home ones, they have cosmo and people, so it's not TOO boring 'cause atleast those magazines are interesting.

Firstly, I hope your Dad's ok. If I was in a waiting room with my brother, we might talk a bit, but we'd still both be a little bored. If my wife was with me, it's not such a drag. Having interesting magazines to read makes a difference, I've been in waiting rooms where they've had caravanning, motoring and boating mags. Waiting rooms are too boring as it is, without having to read that sort of mag.

Sometimes I read the magazines...look for any interesting free information that I can take home...I listen to the television if there is anything good on...I people watch also...sometimes I just close my eyes and relax...

Hi Feona, I don't really read the magazines, I think it's just something to do with my hands. Earlier in the day, the telly has talkshows, which can be better than afternoon re-runs. I sort of people peek, having quick little glances before disappearing into the magazine that I'm not even reading. As for closing my eyes and relaxing, I could never manage that in a waiting room, I'm always way to stressed.

Sometimes for a giggle try starting to Yawn. It's amazing how quickly it spreads around the room. Pretty soon everyone will be doing it and as new people enter and others leave it can continue all day.
@muscare (3068)

14 May 08
Well, that'll be a good one to try, especially if the waiting room is full. I won't need to try too hard, the boredom from waiting means a yawn is never far away anyway, and helps to relieve the stress!

I really hate being in the waiting rooms. I try to occupy myself but it's hard. I will read the magazines, watch the tv and twiddle my thumbs. I always have to be busy or at least doing something with my hands. I don't watch other people wait because that would make me more bored.
@muscare (3068)

Yes, that's the one thing I find, is that I really need something to do with my hands. That's why I have the magazines, not so much for reading, mor for just keeping my hands busy flicking through.

the only time i see a doctor is when i am dying and 9 times out of 10 i get taken right in. the times when i dont, i lay on the floor and moan until somebody helps me. i have seizures and a heart condition so i know when i need immediate help and how to get it.

Apart from the fact that you have serious health problems, the part about lying on the floor moaning made me smile. I was just picturing myself trying it. Hope things don't get any worse for you.
