How do you play poker?

I have recently started playing poker, and I am improving every day (at least it feels like that). I play online, mainly at Full Tilt Poker. It is a really good site with both free-rolls, play money tables and real money tables. What I have noticed though is that there is very many different tactics and that people play with lot of different strategies. For example around the play money tables people play very loosely and throw their chips at everything, whether they have decent cards or not. The free-rolls are the same in the beginning, people go all in to try to receive that chip-lead edge but after a while the play gets tighter. Do you think this is any good for training, or is it not "real" poker. Should I put some of my own money on and play at the real money tables for improving of my skill, or will I get there even when playing free-rolls? How did you start playing? Any good ideas? What is your favourite site?

I think that free-rolls are something you should stay away from if you are new. Unless of course if you plan on only playing multi-table tourneys. The reason for this is that it's two kinds of different games. Poker cannot be explained in one go, but I will offer a couple of suggestions: 1. Do not deposit real money, you are new - and people can often tell. Wait until you've got about 10,000 hands or so under your belt. 2. Don't be afraid to take a stab at the pot every now and then, even if you got nothing. Don't bet so much of your stack that you commit yourself, though. Leave yourself an out. And if someone goes all-in after you for an extra $20, you should call even with nothing, but just know that the others will see what you've done and try to capitalize on it. 3. Do not bet if you have the nuts. Every now and then, you might flop a straight with 2 spades, for instance. You might make a substantial bet here, to get anybody with two other spades in their hand to fold out. But typically, you will want them to bet into you. NOTE: Do not check after the river if you have the nuts - make them pay! They might check if you do, then you're left with no profit from the river. 4. Don't just blindly call all the time. Make some raises if you hit top pair or want to keep someone off a draw. Calling/checking is often seen as a sign of weakness. (Keep that in mind when you have 4 aces though ;) - just call, call, call!) 5. Be prepared to have your dreams dashed lol... online poker is rough business. I like playing at pokerroom and AbsolutePoker, and for some reason, I detest FullTilt.. can't explain why though :-/ Good luck and you can add me as a friend if you'd like. There is so much more to poker than this...

Thanks for that! I actually do believe I am not insanely bad. I know it sound like bragging, but somehow I feel like I have pretty quickly grasped different strategies. I can pick up how people play, and I am usually right in my guesses (the times when I get to see the cards). As I mentioned it is very different playing in the last nine people of a free-roll, compared to playing early, but my strategies seems to work. So far I have won about $30 (real money) on free-rolls and put them into play on real money tables. The problem is there that I am to cautious and to afraid to loose my money, that I play way, way to passive. But at least it is a way to practise without putting my own money on the line.

Try the cash games if you are playing for real money. This is what most poker players make their money on. You don't have to sit through a whole tourney and you can leave while you're ahead, which is the point after all lol... in a tourney style game, you can't leave when you get ahead - you gotta stick it out to the bitter end and sometimes having 10 good hands previously means nothing when a full house crashes down on your flush.. talk about painful. Hope you have good fortune. Happy flopping!

I mainly play at full tilt poker, because they have lots of freerolls, where you can participate without having to do a deposit. I have also tried pokerstars, but I do not like their layout and there are way, way to many people playing their freerolls!

Hey how u going, I also play quite a bit of poker at Full Tilt it is one of the best sites running I believe. I know what you mean about people playing loose on the freerolls. Its not the best way to improve your skills. I have a link you can use to get some free bankrolls for a few different sites. This is how I started off and is the best way to improve your skills as you are playing with real money. Unfortunately you wont be able to get the bankroll for fulltilt as you already have an account there but there are I think 5 sites where you can recieve the bankroll. Good luck with your poker playing and let me know how you go with your free bankroll. The link is http://www.yourpokercash.com/?addby=4FREE

Thank you! I have been a bit busy lately and haven't had much time to play, but as soon as work gets a bit slower so I don't have to work such long days I'll get back to it. Then I'll have a look at that link! Thanks for replying!

i think you should wait awhile before you start playing for real money, playing for real money is better for seeing how other people really play poker because money is involved, but id wait till you know how to play, lol. another thing is if you are really trying to learn and planning on playing in a real tournament as in not online, but in real life, i suggest you practice with your friends, i have this little weekly get to gathers with my neighbors and friends, its just like a 20 dollar buy in and its mostly just for fun, but its good practice, 1 year ago i didnt know how to play poker, 3 months ago i got 6th place out of a 100 people in a world series qualifying tournament, i want my first table, and got a 10,000 dollar buy in to the main event for qualifying, got 6th over all, you pick it up quick :) and i dont play online, only play against people in real life, best way to learn i say

Thank you! I am actually picking it up pretty quickly, even playing online :) But I agree with you, I have won some money that I have used in real money play and it is very different than with play money and in freerolls. Unfortunately there are very few of my friends that likes poker, so I have a bit of a hard time getting any real life practise! However, I will look for it! Thank you for your response! It was really a thrilling journey you have had! Coming sixth in the main event within a year from starting, that is amazing! Good luck playing!
