Writing as a Brit, I find the American primary system baffling. Prospective candidates spend months and millions of dollars just to get their party's nomination. It's like fighting an election and then - assuming you even win - having to fight the real election almost immediately after. I also don't quite get this business of people being "registered" for whatever party - it doesn't seem to be quite the same thing as being a party member and activist, or am I wrong?
Personally, I prefer the British approach of political parties choosing their own leaders through their own internal processes - usually the process only takes a few weeks, and the candidates don't have to campaign among the general population.
As far as I can see, neither system produces superior leaders, but ours is at least cheaper.
