A question for all of my kitty loving friends.....

Now, with me being the big kitty lover that I am, you would think that I already know the answer to my own question. But I don't and I need your help please. Would you please give me some ideas of some more inexpensive ways to deal with those pesky fleas that are bothering my kitties? I'm so tired of having to use toxic flea spray every week (which means braving 10 out of 11 sets of claws each time. And Sevin Dust works, but I get tired of having to wipe down all of the dusty paw prints and wash my sheets every day from kitties getting it all over my bed. And right now, I just can't get up enough money for what I really want to use, which is the Frontline Plus, even if I go online to order it. Having 11 cats makes it a bit too expensive to buy a 12 pack of that every month. I heard that putting yeast in the canned food helps to get rid of the fleas.
Any help you can give me on this would be sooooooo very appreciated. Thanks and big hugs to all.........Carryl

I have to say that the only thing I've found to really work and that I've heard from other people to be the only thing that works, is Frontline. Perhaps you can do some eBay selling or budget in another area in your life to be able to afford it? It really does seem to be the best option. Best flea-free wishes for you!

Yes, I use the Advantage on mine, it's about $10 a tube, I buy it from 1-800-Pet Meds, and get a slight discount. It works for about a month. It's the only thing that's worked for me.
Speaking of which, I need to get more of that soon myself!

I read somewhere that you can use the staff that people use on kids.the rid for lice cause it has conditioner in it not to dry the skin out.But if you have a lot of cats then try the new thing out calld bio sport for fleas & tick.Good luck.

Try to avoid using pesticides on your kitty. Cats have very thin skin and will absorb the chemicals into their blood stream. The chemicals will build up over time and can cause nervous system disorders.
Here is a good article on natural flea prevention that you may be able to use. It gives tips on getting fleas off of your pet as well as reducing the number of fleas in your house and yard: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/758039/tips_for_natural_flea_control.html

I noticed one of your sources was MotherEarth News. I love that magazine and am a faithful subscriber to it. While reading your article, I already knew about most of the natural ways of concuring fleas which I've read from that magazine.

I just read this thread to get ideas. About the only thing I've ever used that worked was frontline but I love the idea of using yeast powder and I'll definitely try that one if the cats get fleas this Summer. Thanks for posting this helpful thread.

According to TV and our vet, vacuuming every day, including the upholstered furniture, and sprinkling salt on carpets is one of the best ways to control them. The eggs can't hatch out and make more. And putting a 1-inch piece of a flea collar in the dust bag or cup kills fleas right away. Cheap AND effective AND safe... it sure helps with our 3 dogs!

Hi Lish. I thought that too. But my veterinarian said that it isn't harmful to the animals....at least the powdered form isn't anyway. It really works too, but you have to use it at the bare minimum, once a week for it to keep working. I use it in the house too if the fleas start showing up.

There's a product called "Capstar" that kills fleas right away.
If you get the dog size, cut it in half, then 6 pills will do your 11 cats (I need 12 pills.)
If you treat them 4 days in a row, then a week later treat them again, then a week later again, that should get the entire life cycle.
They only last 24 hours, but they are cheaper than the monthly application.
You might also consider bombing the house (the cats not in it of course) with a spray that kills all phases of the life cycle.
I did this last fall, capstar/bomb/spray the yard and the flea problem pretty much went away.

I use brewers yeast in the food. I wouldn't recommend regular yeast...I think the results would be rather toxic.
I would sprinkle borax in the carpets, this will help dry out the fleas and their eggs. Also put some sort of flea control stuff in the vacuum as when you use it it does suck up fleas and their eggs.
Eucalyptus works wonders on fleas, as does lavender (I don't know about lavender as I haven't used it.) Also Marigolds work well too.
I used toxic flea preparations only once and it almost killed my cat, so I have eliminated that from any treatment of my animals. I would go on line and do a search on natural flea treatments for cats. I used to bathe one of my cats when he got fleas. He loved baths so it was easy. From the sound of your 11, it would be a sure cause of a trip to the ER for the person giving the bath.

I found a new remedy for fleas yesterday in a all natural pet care book. It is of all things...rosemary! You boil a teaspoon of dry or a tablespoon of fresh rosemary in a pint of water. Boil it for about two minutes. Wait for it to cool and strain it before you put it in a spray bottle. Then spray your animals to your heart's content and it should get rid of the fleas. It's worth a try...

right now petco online has the 12 pk for 140.00 that is very expensive .. I have a question are all your cats indoor? If so get frontline for so many that will kill the fleas that jump on those guy for the month and it will make sure that the fleas can lay eggs. that way you start to control them and just try and do opposite cats every month that way your cutting down the flea population. I have to get some frontline for my puppers coming up. LOL!!! and I have to get it for my kitties too. LOL!!!

Actually seven of my cats are inside, one is inside/outside, and the other three are strictly outside. So I have both battles going on right now. LOL! I saw frontline on 1800petmeds for something like $138.00 too. But with me not working, that's a bit steep. Believe me, when I do have the money, I will probably stock up on it! Thanks hon.

alright buy one box of frontline plus give one tube to the inside outside kitty who is probably bringing fleas to the others and one tube to one outside kitty and another tube to an inside kitty at least if you get the outside inside kitty that is half the battle because once you gain control again then you won't have to worry so much.. LOL!!!

Ask your vet about diatomacious earth. He or she should be able to tell you where to get it & how to use it. Some locals here in Austin Texas swear by the stuff.
And remember, flea eggs exposed to sunlight die. Never hatch. Is your yard very shady?

Hello dear sweet Katlady2, this is Mama Vickie and I too have cats three of them in fact. There is a simple way to keep fleas off of them and you and your home. First buy either fresh clove garlic to give them a peeled piece of clove of garlic once a month like a pill down there throat, or if that is too difficult for you then buy the minced garlic in a jar and mix it in their wet food daily. You do feed them some wet food don't you to help keep down hairballs? Anyway, the 2nd thing is place a bowl of soapy water under a night light each night, preferably with the light cover off of it and the bulb pointing downward toward the water. the light will draw the fleas to it during the night hours and the hot bulb will repel them into the soapy water that they can't escape from. You'll just have to flush them each morning. My lttle darlings have no fleas.
Well, I tried to copy and paste a picture of my cats into this discussion response but it won't let me do that. That is ridiculous! Anyway it works.
love Mama Vickie

Hello Mama Vickie. I just wanted to start by saying thank you for the friend request. I added you as soon as I logged in.
You know, I usually don't give my kitties wet food, mainly because our budget is so darned tight right now it can't even let out a squeak. But I'm getting the feeling that I just might have to manage to squeeze it in somehow. Thanks for the tips too. I will have to give these wonderful suggestions a try. Obviously they work since your furbabies have no fleas on them. Oh, and about the adding of your pictures to replies and discussions, you won't be able to do that until you reach 500 posts. I know that's aggravating, but that's the rule they have here. But if you're anything like I was in the beginning, you will reach that goal in no time at all. Thanks again hon. And welcome to Mylot. I hope you enjoy it here.

While I can sympathise with you for a few pets Carryl I can't imagine what a trial this must be with so many lovely kitties .
I've heard of this product that is available in the US and you might want to check it out. Here's a link for you:

I'd never heard of yeast as a solution to flea's I'll have to try that one. I use a flea product on my cats that lasts for years, it says it only lasts one year but I find it lasts at least 3. It's called strong hold and I get it from my vets but it's probably available online, it kills all the fleas in the house too so when you have enough money (it would be pretty expensive for 12 cats mind as you have to put it on once a month for three months) give it a try. You may not need to treat the cats again for at least a year maybe more.

well you want to use special age limits all the products have a label for. but I reccemend using flea and tick collars and some kinds that you just put a drop on the back of their neck about two-five days a week

I wish I could use the flea collars, but several of my cats are allergic to them. As for the drops, the only kind that would work is the Frontline, and that's the one that I mentioned I couldn't afford at the moment. Thanks for the advice though. I appreciate it.

Hi Katlady, just dip each cat in the dawn and warm water bucket really fast, and wear some gloves, they'll only be angry for a short time and it will be worth it. they like being clean and flealess, and they'll thank you later.
