The day the earth shake!! May 12nd, yes, yesterday, violently. I'm not in Sichuan, but here in Nanjing, thousands of miles away from epicentre, people in downtown still felt the shake. My friend works in downtown Nanjing, in a tall building, at about 3 o'clock, she felt dizzy, then all the people felt. They rushed out of the building from the stairs, 26th floor, legs weak when down to earth. Luckily, nothing unfortunate happens in Nanjing, but others places in China are not so luckly. Where are you gonna hide if the earthquake happens? Maybe you're driving in a car, maybe you're sleeping at home, maybe you're travelling~~ Please share

way back in the 90's ,here in the philippines. we had a strong earthquake ,same intensity as the on in china and we were at the 7th floor of a very old building in manila. the building shook us and we can't seem to stand up. pieces of everything inside the room keeps on falling on us and the only thing we can do is hide under a table and prayed so hard that it would stop and eventually it did and we started using the stairs to go down before the after shock begins.

Firstly Lynettebyc, I would like to say that my thoughts and prayers go out to the people affected by this quake in China in anyway. The poor people that have lost their lives and their friends and family. It is very sad that this has happened.
I very much believe in 'but for the grace of God go I' so I am a fatalist really. Even if you were in a place with no buildings around you at all you may be standing on a part of the ground that opens up so I don't think anywhere is a safe place not even a safe country as we are experiencing more and more earthquakes all over the world, even here in the UK but not on such a large scale but they are getting larger each time.
All I ask is that is the worst ever happened was that myself and my children would all be together and not separated in any way.

Thanks ellie, yeah, there may be not an effective way to pretend ourselves from getting injured. I wish all the bad things will never happen to innocent people all around the world. If that really has to happen, please let them die in the arms of families, be together and not separated.
Will god hear our prayers?

Hi Lynette, I am praying hard for miracles to now occur and the people still trapped are found alive. It is an awful thing that has happened. The thoughts and prayers are with the Chinese people and the Burmese people and people all over the world that are suffering because of the effects of these natural disasters. Ellie:D

Recently I have seen the dreadful scene of earthquake in Sichuan in tv news. I understand that what great damage an earthquake can do to human and environment. The tall building dwellers and people who work there are highly exposed to the danger of the collapse of buildings. I have never experienced this natural disaster before and I understand that we must keep away from staying in any building. I believe the safest place will be the open space which is far away from buildings. I suggest to construct our building with plastic materials which could stand the strong vibration without breaking.

Hello, lkbooi, plastic materials can stand strong vibration? I know that plastics are not easy to break, but as to stand strong vibration, i've no idea. Sounds like you know sth about material, huh? Maybe we can have a further discussion, haha.
Yes, the earthquake's destructive. All know that we should find an open place to protect ourselves from the building's collapse, but what if there's no open places nearby, or what if we can't run out to the open areas in a limited time? I'm puzzled and worried.
Thanks for sharing, good luck

I am glad to know you are fine, my dear friend. I am from Guangzhou. It's also far from the earthquake locations. The earthquake didn't affect here. However, I feel so sad to see those people who lost their family and home.
If the earthquake occurs, do not hide under the desks, tables, beds etc. I have read the help instruction from the experts. The best is to hide beside two tables and try to bend yourself as low as possible.
Last time there was the snow disaster. And our family donated money and clothes. And this time it will be the same. I hope to do something for those people. I hope all people will stay well.
I love China

Thanks youless, i'm in Nanjing, also fine, it's far from Sichuan. You're very kind-hearted, last time i donate money and this time i will too, just like you. And this time i'm going to raise the money. So miserable~
Good luck to all the people in disaster area

I live in Malaysia and never ever experience a real earthquake in my life before. So, i don't know where I should go. But for sure I'll quickily come out from tall building and follow the crowds.

Thanks lieanat, you're lucky~~
Maybe time's so limit for you to run out of the building. I've learned that there are only seconds from you feel the shake to the tall building fall down. It's better find a place, relatively safe to hide.
Good luck to China.

my mother always tell me to run fast to a place that is clear from trees, building and falling debris. it could be in a playground, in a soccer field or in the oval. when i was in school we have an earthquake drill where we were ask to run to the nearest oval pretending that an earthquake is happening, of course we cannot always find the nearest clear place so my mother also told me to hide under the dining table when there's an earthquake and try to grasp on its sides until the earth stops to move.

Hello djmarion, your mom's great, she keeps teaching you how to save lives by oneself before people come by. A clear place is right. But i notice that it's difficult now for us to find a clear place large enough here in China, especially in downtown, in metropolis. Tall buiding everywhere. I start to feel afraid what will be like years after.

Hmm, I don't know! I am lucky that I am born in a reasonably safe place--at least safe from earthquakes. But my heart goes out to the victims of natural calamities such as earthquakes, floods, and so on.
Someone sent me the pictures of the quake today. It was really heart rending. I am glad you are safe.

if i m at house i ll probably stand under the door frame or hide under a table or desk. if i m in a car i ll stop, get out of my car and stand where there are no trees or lamp posts.

Hi, fleur_pertal. I've just got a mail from a friend, it says that it's not safe to stand under the door frame or under a table or desk, better lie beside the furniture or somewhere else. It is said that in this way, if the house fells down or something drop, it first land on the furniture without hitting the body directly.Yeah, if you're driving a car, i'd stop, do the same as you. Thanks for sharing.

Hi lynettebyc,
In the fast world we are observing from the nature is very less, but the birds animals knows the earthquake and natural disasters, yes they know the predictions, this is not a joke, I m sure the casualities is very less in animals compare to human in china. when the earth quke you can observe, the body feels uneasy,(like when u suffered hi pressure), better to come out of the house or office building. If you are driving the care stop driving get down from the car.

The truth is there's probably nowhere truly safe you can hide. Its best, if you're religious, to ask God to help you and if you're not just look for somewhere with somnething solid overhead to hide under.
They say doorways are best and never go out into the open air unless you're in the desert.
Its really awfull what happened in China but how does anyone predict these things ?
Perhaps you can build extra strong doorways in your house or make sure you don't live on a faultline. Maybe you can grow a really big and strong tree in your backyard to hide under when the quake comes.
Other than that you depend on God. So maybe we should find such a being if we don't know one.
He's around.

i do not think you can hide when something like this hits. everyone is just going about their day and then all of the sudden an earthquake hits. there is no warning. even if there were a warning there would be such panic ensuing that people would get trampled no doubt. it is just an unfortunate and tragic thing that all those people had to perish.

this is a very serious discussion.when i was there i have no time to think.so we have to react.so we just want to get out of any building, get out of vehicles....by using any forms like emergency exits....but we should get out of any building and we should go to any bare ground

Yes, here we raise this discussion, but if it really happens in a minute, we are probably in a panic and don't know about anything nor think about anything, just run. I've telephoned who nearby Sichuan Province and who has survived, she said people just run out of their building out of subconscious without knowing anything. They run out without shoes, without clothes. They grab anything they see at random and run out. This thing may be a bag, a watch or what else, they don't know. They just want to protect sth, get sth out and run.

Shanghai felt the shake? Then you might be in a tall building. I'm sorry too that so many people lost their homes and families. We can do something to help them, like donate blood, donate clothes or money, or at least we can pray for them. Thanks for sharing, enjoy life.

you cant really hide from an earthquake.
If your in a home, best thing i know to do is stand in a door frame. I dont speak from experience, just from stuff i've heard. I've never been in an earthquake before.
