Dirty dishes - Do you leave them overnight?

I live with a couple and they would always leave their dirty dishes overnight on the sink. This doesn't really bother me, but sometimes it can be an inconvenience if I need to wash something on the sink. This however got me into thinking about people's habits when it comes to doing their dishes. Do you wash your dishes every meal or do you let it pile up before you clean up? Do you clean up everynight and leave the kitchen neat and tidy before turning off the lights, or you let the dirty dishes soaked overnight? Do you wash them by hand or do you throw them in the dishwater?

Dirty dishes in this house are either washed and in the drain pan or in the dishwasher when I go to bed at night. I don't always do it RIGHT after dinner, but it does get done.

That is a good habit. Having a clean kitchen before retiring for the night. Thanks for sharing!

I do have a dishwasher. So I always put all my soiled dishes and pots and pans in the washer. I have a great detergent that will disinfect and shine them up. So if they are left overnight, there will be mice and rats.

I personally hate dishes in the sink. I will let a couple of things like my coffee cups be in there but it drives me nuts and I have to wash them so my sink is clear of the dishes. I like the fact that there's not a mess and it's clean. I was brought up this way and still do it til this day. Everyone is different and I choose to have my sink dish free. I have a friend that has his dishes pile in the sink and see's how I am and jokingly will say " when are you going to come over and do my dishes?" I just laugh. I have on occasion done his dishes for him when I go over to his place to hang out and I see all the dishes in the sink and try to tell my self "ok this isn't your place so you don't have to do them" but it drives me nuts and he knows it but appreciates I do them for him. He says "I would have gotten around to them sooner or leter" Everyone is different I've come to find out when it comes to dishes being in the sink. Some just have hectic schedules and can't attend to them right away and do them befor the night is through.

I hate only washing a few small amounts of dishes at a time especially since we're starting to use our dishwasher more. I hate not running a full dish load in the dishwasher. So sometimes we'll leave them sit in the sink, or we'll just keep loading the dishwasher until it's time to run it. It all depends really.

Well, it is more economical to run a full load, than to run several small loads. Thanks for sharing!

I wash our dishes with my own hands, sometimes my husband do it. I see to it that the kitchen is neat and tidy always but there are times that I am so tired and would want to retire so I just soak the dishes with water and do the very moment i find time. We have a small kitchen so piling is up is not advisable but even if it is wide enough, i won't let it pile up if I still have enough strength to clean it.

I was taught to never leave dishes in the sink. But sometimes if I have a few dirty, and am just too tired to do them, I will leave them for the morning. If I am cooking I try to wash them as I go.

I almost always put my dishes immediately in the dishwasher after I use them. So I usually keep my dishwasher consistently unloaded. I don't like leaving dishes out, because I don't want to attract any kind of bugs or ants or whatever may lurk in apartments. I never have had that problem, but then again, I always do my dishes. I don't usually wash them by hand though. I always feel the dishwasher will get them cleaner than I could.

I like the kitchen to be cleaned up. I like the dishes either washed and out of the way, or in the dish washr. My man does not share this with me. It irritates me a lot if I have to pick dirty dishes out of cold fatty water in the sink before I can use it in the morning.

I wash all my dishes by hand. Depending on whats going on that night and how tired I am, I will leave the dishes until the morning. When cooking I try to do the dishes as I go along that way I don't have as much to do after supper. My kids are getting old enough now that they are helping out with the dishes.

Oh my I am guilty attimesof leaving a few dirty dishes in the kitchen but I generally get them done before bedtime. I do not like dish washing but I do like a tidy kitchen yet a few things escape me at times.. I wash them by hand.

No, I won't. I will wash them immediately. Leaving them overnight will attract some roaches to be there which is disgusting to me. Besides, my mom always want her kitchen to be clean and neat. One of my roommate can just leave the dirty dishes there for a couple of days. The other 3 of us consider it to be dirty and disgusting somehow. Fortunately, she did not do that frequently these days.

I try to avoid having dirty dishes but that is not always possible. I do use paper plates and bowls most of the time. I use regular silverware and glasses. If I don't wash out the dishes pretty soon, it smells up this small house rather quickly.

I let my dishes pile up during the day and Try to do them after supper time at night. Sometimes i fail at that try and i end up leaving them over night because i got busy doing something else. I hate it when i forget to do them because it leaves a dirty sink. I do wipe all the counters and stove etc put away food and ingredients before i leave the kitchen. If i didnt do that things would get yucky!

I would have to say that the dishes get "done" every night kind of. As it is jst me my husband and my 2 little boys who don't really use many dishes, it can be anywhere from 2-3 days before i need to run the load in the dishwasher.

Wow! I've been wrestling with "do I do them before I go to bed or not" question for the last three hours. I have a tiny kitchen and no dishwasher. I don't mind doing dishes by hand. I live with my boyfriend who was raised with maids and sisters so he doesn't do dishes; he makes dirty dishes. Everytime he does something in the kitchen he makes a mess. I'm the type that will clean up after myself. He's the type that will put dishes in the sink just as I have finished the last dish. Grrrr! Dishes don't get left on the sink; in the sink. It is definitely nicer in the morning if the sink is empty. That isn't happening tomorrow morning in this household.

Hello wayz12. I can't leave my dishes overnight because they're might be roaches and rats eating the leftover foods on the dishes which isn't pretty good. I do wash the dishes after I had eaten a meal. I do wash the dishes by hand.

wayz12_ I clean the pots and pans before I sit down to eat. I wash my dishes but don't always dry them right away. If I clean up too fast, I don't feel like I ate anything!

I use a dishwasher so during the day we just throw them in the dishwasher and if people have been out for most the day and not had many meals and the dishwasher is not full then we just leave it and put it on the next day when it is full, because I don't think that there is any point in wasting the water.

I do wash my dishes right after i used them. I don't know but this is already my habit since I was in my childhoold. I remember when I was in my elementary years. I belong to a big family of 8 siblings. Can you just imagine that dishes..so many dishes to wash...lol. Because of that my mother assigned each one of us a chore. It so happened that i got that chore. I complained alot during the first month but after that I got used to it.
