Dried Beans

There are so many different kinds of dried beans. Lentils, Navy Beans, Kennedy Beans, Pinto Beans, etc. Most of them I have heard of before but I don't know what the differenece is between them or the best way to cook them. In the past, I have cooked lentils using a ham bone and it turned out quiet well. What are your favorite types of dried beans? How do you cook or prepare them? Are there certain beans that are better for dishes than other beans?
