okay, here's what I don't get. People who are emo (i have no issues with people being emo, I have emo friends, I just find this interesting) so the emo kids complain about the preps conforming, but isn't trying to be emo conforming to the emo crowd??? so really, are they being hypercritical??? Am I just confused? so if you are rebelling from pop culture by trying to be emo, isn't that still conforming to a trend advertised by the media???

Exactly. Everybody tries their hardest to be different and usually end up taking two steps backwards and joins a clique. That's all it really is. These 'groups' or 'scenes' are more alike than anything else. I didn't go to a regular high school, but I've heard stories about rivals and stuff from my friends. I didn't identify with anyone, so I just stayed by myself and watched everyone else move around like conforming ants in a line.
