Today was free iced-coffee day at Dunkin' Dougnuts as well as a regular school day. It's been this way for a long time; they promote the free coffee day that also falls on a regular full day of school.
Kids know it is not aloud to leave school property, and yet we do. The security guards don't bother much because most of the poeple become good "friends" with them and they let a lot of stuff slide. So if you walk out the back door to the parking lot, they might stop you but it will be for a conversation. Like, "hey did you catch that game last night?" or "hows your new car?". Stupid stuff, then be about their way. So very easily if you wanted to skip, you could.
However, we have a new principal this year and he is very stickt on the rules. Today he had the rule changed from if caught skipping, you go to the holding room [A room you go to and sit until the end of the period and you get a detention] to you have saturday school and if you are being insubordanate...suspension. Mind you we have three weeks of school left.
Yes, kids know the rules. But it's not that big of a deal. You think so? The dunkin doughnuts is literaly a three minute walk down the street. You walk out the front door, go left and you are there. you can see it fron the front yard of the school.
So I say, why waste the tax dollars and punish them with saturday school? Is it that big of an offense? I can see if they got hit by a car and were killed, they are liable. But if a kid is walking down the stairs and slips becuase the stairs are slipery, they're also liable. I know, I know, not a good example. You catch my drift though?
And why punish one kid, when there are at least 200 kids walking around with iced coffe? This one kid got saturday school for having it, and he told them he got it on his way to school BEFORE school started. [which he did] They however, don't agree. They gave him saturday school. Not to mention they said if he didn't go [ or if anyone doesnt go] who is a senior, they won't walk on graduation.
I understand there are rules and must be followed, but LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Tecahers are walking around with them to. Why not punish them? They have free periods and walk down there. Why should they get special privliges? And with cell phones to? Well that's another topic for later.
