Grapefruit Bigger Than a Bunch of Bananas

A Better Photo of My Baby Bananas - I uploaded a similar image a few days ago, but this one is better. I photographed it again with a ruler in place so you can see the dimensions of each fruit.

Not long ago I started a discussion about hailstones the size of grapefruit, but now I've seen it all. Below is a photograph I took of a grapefruit that is bigger than a whole bunch of bananas. The trick, of course, is that these are miniature bananas, but that is still one big grapefruit. I should say was, because that grapefruit is now in my tummy. Do you like grapefruit? Do you know that eating grapefruit potentiates the effect of certain medications and therefore should not be eaten by some people? I don't take any medicine, so I can eat all the grapefruit I want, especially since I prefer it without added sweeteners. How do you like you grapefruit prepared? If you don't like it, why not? What do you eat instead? Have you seen the miniature bananas in a market near you. Have you every eaten one. I think I'll have one now!

Some people we know put salt on their melons, but we never heard of having it on grapefruit. Here on myLot we learn something new every day.

For some reason the pink grapefruit juice is usually sweeter than the regular kind when purchased as a beverage. However, we have bought extremely sweet white fruit that made lovely juice. I think the pink ones have a slightly different flavor.

I have not had this grapefruit so far.At least i don't know what it is termed in my country. But , the picture looked so sweet and I am just dying to taste this plump, lush looking fruit. Does it have segments inside like what a sweet lime or orange has? I know How grapes taste but I do not know how a grape fruit tastes. What is the colour inside? Share all this information. You can't share the grape fruit with me but share the details. That should give me equal satisfaction.

Yes, the segments are exactly like the lemon or lime and the flavor is nothing like a grape. I don't know why they are called grapefruit! Here is a photo showing what we call a white grapefruit such as the one in my photo: http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2006/06/Grapefruit190606_600x475.jpg They can be pink inside, too, as in this photo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Citrus_paradisi_%28Grapefruit%2C_pink%29.jpg The taste is tart and sweet at the same time, a little like the sweet lime, but unique to itself. As you see, many people here do not like the taste as it is, and some do put on salt or sugar, but I like to eat them just as nature made them. Your avatar is beautiful!

When I was younger I used to hate the color pink. I think it was because in my family's culture pink was a color reserved for girls and boys got to have blue. Boys got to have all of the toys, too, and special treatment, so I resented them for that and also I liked the color blue! Now, however, I not only like pink but am starting to favor it a bit. Those orchids would be gorgeous in any color!

We bought them at the dollar store, so they were inexpensive, but here the price on bananas fluctuates so wildly, it is hard to tell. At the regular market they would be quite a bit more expensive, but we do not buy them there.

And i wonder how big is the banana tree.. a bonsai banana tree.. If we don't have a big yard at home we can still have a banana tree. A tiny one

That would be so cute! I was just wondering the other day if anyone had ever grown miniature sweet corn in a flower pot on the porch. A miniature banana tree would be most wonderful.

I do like grapefruit, but I don't buy them very often. I usually eat them by cutting it in half and scooping out the insides with a spoon. I don't usually use sugar either on mine. As for the little bananas (plantains?)I've had them a few times, and they are quite good. But, I usually go for the cheaper regular bananas.

They can be expensive! But being a frugal tightwad, I bought them at the dollar store, the same one where we got Dulcinea watermelons for 50 cents each last summer.

I am not really crazy about grapefruit... since everytime i eat one... i end up with the most sour taste... which i know is not often the case for grapefruit... but from time to time... when i feel like it... i grab one from the grocery... and add salt to every bite... Well, i have seen a lot of bananas in different sizes and shapes... but the weirdest kind of banana that i eat is one full of seeds... yes... a banana full of seeds inside... they are grown by the ethnic minorities in my province... and is a delicacy in their culture... that type of banana felt weird in my mouth...

I would try a seedy banana! But it would take me a while to work up to putting salt on a grapefruit. So many people say in their replies here that that is how they eat their grapefruit that I may be tempted to try it eventually.

ah, okay i got it now. and thanks for your further information dear friend. i just know it that grapefruit can make the medicine have stronger effect. does it happen to any medicine or specific medicine?

I think it is more of a problem with some specific medications rather than all of them, but it is a little like black pepper, it increases the nutrition of your food, but since medicine is supposed to be carefully measured, people ought not take anything that makes it stronger or dilutes its effect.

I do not think we get it here in India. But it seems like very juicy, citrus kind. How do you eat it? It is sweet or lemony?

It is both bitter and sweet at the same time. Yes, it is citrus. Like a big yellow orange only more sour and more sweet at the same time.

I really enjoy grapefruits - I like to peel them like an orange and pop them in my mouth slice by slice - or if I am sitting down to eat one for a breakfast I will slice it in halves and add a little sprinkling of sea salt over and then scoop out with a grapefruit spoon (after loosening the sections with a paring knife) for an evening snack I will usually cut the grapefruit in half and then slice the halves and eat them off of the rind. the bananas are cute! do you have a miniature tree? if so do you grow it in a pot? the kids have been wanting to buy a miniature banana tree - but it would have to come in during the cooler months.

Hi, Modestah! Oh, my no I didn't grow the bananas. We bought a bunch at the 99 cents only store--isn't that just amazing. I have heard of people growing them in the AeroGardens, but we move back and forth so often we cannot grow anything with a season lon ger than a few months, alas. My garden is full of lettuce and other fast growing greens, and a few garden vegetables and some flower, though. All my plants are grown in liquid nutrient solution, though, not in dirty. We live in an upstairs condo and do not have access to the ground, except to walk to the garage :-) Thanks for stopping by!

That's a very sizable grapefruit, drannhh, the largest grapefruit I have laid my eyes on. We do get quite a lot of grapefruits selling in our supermarkets, and usually their sizes are up to about 4 inches diameter. I like grapefruit although I don't buy it often to eat. Most of the time, we eat other citrus fruits as well as tropical fruits found in this region. The only way I eat my grapefruit is to slice it in half, apply some sugar on top and then use a tea spoon to dig out the flesh and juice and put them in my mouth. I like eating the fruit this way, but the grapefruit mustn't be too sour.

Most of the grapefruits we get in our markets here are the thin skinned variety, but this one has a very thick skin with lots of that bitter white stuff that contains the healthy bioflavinoids. This one in the photo was very sweet, but when I was much younger I remember putting sugar on the halves and eating the the way you do. Now I rather enjoy the tartness.

Ok. Here is my recipe. I know, just like all of my other recipes it is really long and really time consuming and of course, made from scratch. LOL I take a huge Ruby Red grapefruit. I roll it around on the counter while pressing down on it with my palm to soften it and break open some of the pulp. Then I cut it in half and squeeze it into a glass. I add crushed ice. Then........last but not least..........wait for it....... I ADD VODKA!! LOL Great photo.

I like grapefruit for its bitter-juicy quality. It is not so easy to eat it as it my take long time, but it is worth that. If about the photo, I don't know what to think - are these bananas too small or the grapefruit is too big!

A good play on words! I like the bitterness, too, and therefore would have to say there is no such thing as too big a grapefruit--so the bananas must be too small.

I have not seen the miniature bananas in the stores here. I love grapefruit just plain. I only take vitamins, no medicines, but I was aware of the tendency of the grapefruit to interact with medications. I will even just peel and eat them like an orange.

I have peeled the grapefruit and eaten them like an orange too, but usually I cut them in half and section them with my 30-year old favorite grapefruit knife. Unfortunately, I have never seen another one I like as much and since we travel between two homes and can only carry so much, I only "visit" this wonderful knife in the summer. The stores here have better and cheaper grapefuits :-)

Hello my friend :):):):) How's your weekend going? Let's see.. grapefruit.... I"m not the biggest fan of those. To me they are a bit... well not sweet:) The only times I ate some my daughter had sprinkled a bit of sugar over it, but for that I prefer to have an orange and no need for the sugar on top :) As for the miniature bananas I love them! I'm always checking to see when they have them in the supermarkets around here because they're favorites. Baby bananas my daughter calls them, she likes them too :)

I do not like grapefruit. I never buy it. I have seen those miniature bananas and I have bought them before. I did not think they were nearly as good as the bananas that I normally buy. I like to buy organic bananas. They taste so much better than regular bananas.

In an ideal world I would grow the mini bananas in my AeroGarden indoors, lol. Every crop can vary, so we have gotten miniature bananas that taste great and others that did not. Organic is good.

I love those little mini bananas! they are so cute!! It's been a long time since I've eaten a grapefruit. I like them with other fruits like in a fruit salad but sometimes there are just a little too bitter for me to really enjoy! I don't add sugar to most things either, so that's not something I would do to force myself to eat one!! I like a few bites of them, but the whole grapefruit is too much for me!

Bananas are healthy too. I volunteer to eat the rest of your grapefruit, as some people eat just a half, but I usually down the whole thing and the bigger the better. You probably don't like bitter lemon tonic (with quinine ;-) either!
