Does Texting Aid Grammatical Incompetencies of Students?

As an educator, I believe so. I seldom nag at my teens when they send me slang, shortened or "carabao-English" sentence constructions in their text messages. I don't mean to be an outdated individual in a family of teenagers, but I just need to let them practice effective communication without sacrificing language and grammar.

at first, most people use it to save spaces coz longer messages mean more cost. but the more we use a language, the more we get accustomed to it, the more we think it is the mainstream.
practicing both will help.

I am currently doing my a-levels and a man came in and started ranting about how we should not use text speak in our exams, just because we are constantly attached to our phones. I was all wtf? 1) Who on earth would write in text speak? 2) I text in full sentences as do many people I know, so I don't see the problem. So basically it takes a stupid person to not be able to separate texting from education.

I guess that really depends, I use those so so-called broken or Carabao-English mode of writing because I want to save more spaces and spend them all in one sending.
Like here or when I'm writing on papers, I use proper writing and never did use nor sacrifice the language. And whenever I see one here, I am always irritated since I always thought that this place is one good way of learning the proper way of writing English..

This is one reason why i prefer to call rather than to send a text message... most of the time... i cannot decipher the lack of letters, use of english and tagalog in one sentence... and simple the construction of the sentence... teens are so getting used to this that even when writing reports... they apply the text type sentences...

I believe that texting and email has made it more likely to drop grammar and spelling for slang. I make an effort to at least spell check my emails and posts before submitting them. I get going pretty fast typing and I will forget caps and end up running on sentences.
