For years we only had a dog. Then about a month ago we went to a small animal fair and since we had been talking about getting guinea pigs we bought 2 guinea pigs and brought them home. My older sons friend bought hamsters and was unable to keep them so we are "hamster sitting" but the female was pregnant when we got her so we would up with 9 hamsters. We are down to 7 now and getting rid of them fast. My foster child has 2 gerbils and my other son bought a red tailed boa (snake). Now I feel like we have our own small animal fair LOL How many pets do you have?

Our dog is an outside dog. When he was born (we had momma dog at the time) he looked like Scooby on the cartoons. Now he looks like Ralph the sheep dog in the cartoons LOL We are unable to have a cat due to my husband and son with severe cat allergies that require hospitalization.

I've got one dog, one cat and 3 fish currently. I am thinking about adding anothe kitten to the menagerie however, I am concerned that the cat might scratch the new furniture I just bought!

Hi Countrymom - OMG... guinea pigs, hamsters and a dog?! Oh, I almost forgot the gerbil and the SNAKE! yikes! I do not know if I would ever allow my son to have a snake in our house. I don't think I would. Especially since we have a cat and a dog. I would be afraid that the snake would not only get out but could hurt our other pets if it did get out. Especially a big snake. Boas are big, aren't they? How big is the one your son has? We used to have a 30 gallon fish tank but not since we moved to California. We will probably get another one after we move again this summer as it should be a fairly permanent move. Ya never know! LoL

I suspect a fish tank is on the kids list next LOL As for the boa, well, *sigh* she should get to be about 8 to 14 feet depending on how her particular lineage is. I am very very particular on snakes and they have to be real loves when it comes to interaction with humans. I have been around boas quite a bit and some can be a bit temperamental. So far this one isn't. I am hoping she will remain very docile. My son is in charge of her and I just over see it. After awhile though snakes are rather like watching the paint dry. They just don't do a lot except at feeding time LOL Needless to say, I have required a locking cage for the hamsters and gerbils protection.

Yeah, like Countrymom says, big snakes are actually pretty boring. They basically just lie there in a pile. They only need to eat every couple of months or so - right?
There was a 200 pound classroom pet boa in the science lab when I was in school. It ate a thawed, frozen chicken once every few months and I hardly ever saw it move. Once we put an old ornery gerbil in it's cage (I know, awful) to see if it would eat it. The gerbil ran all over the snake and even sat on its head for awhile. The snake had its eyes open, but it never moved. We finally took the poor gerbil out.

Wow... lucky for that poor little gerbil! I guess that probably the movies have made me a little weary of snakes in general. I know that they are most likely given a bad rap and made to seem scarier than they actual are in real life. But, I don't know... they just kind of freak me out! They are so slithery and unpredictable. You just never know what they are going to do... just lie there (like you said) or strike their prey in a nano-second!

I love a lazy fat cat lying outside on the porch but sadly we cannot have any due to husband and son with allergies. I worked in a vet clinic for a time and really enjoy all animals.

I like the pets but it is not that easy to afford high rising prices of everything.

I am a dog lover! I love Beagles and Basset Hounds. I once had a Beagle Dachund mix. she was a great dog but had some serious back problems (the Dachund side of the family) and a disc ruptured and she was paralyzed sadly. My sister has 2 MaCaws and several turtles and 3 dogs. Guess we didn't get enough critters growing up LOL

Our Beagle/Dachund had a beagle body and was black and white with a dachund face. She was really really cute. Sadly when she became paralyzed we had to have her put to sleep. She was paralyzed from her neck down so it wasn't really possible to give her the care she would've needed and this was the best decision for her. We named her Peebody because while we were trying to decide on a name for her she peed all over my husband thus she became Mrs. Peebody. People used to ask how we named her then they would laugh.

At this monent in time we have one tabby white cat who is almost 4, a kitten who is black and white and is almost a year old, and two guinea pigs which are tri colour. We haven't long found our hamster a new home and our fish a new home.
In the past we have had more fish, rabbits, stick insects, and as a child we had a dog.
I think it is ggod to have pets so the children can learn about them and how to look after animals

when i was younger we used to own a small farm in the province... consisting of more or less 50 pigs lots of chickens and a fish pen it's a small house that floats on water with probably thousands of tiny fishes in two of the nets on its side we'd go to the province once a month to check how business is but we found out that our traitorous business partner has been cheating on us... now we just have 4 dogs and a rabbit at home..

Hi chivolaski - Sorry to hear about your traitorous business partner. That is a real shame. I don't know how some people can live with themselves. I think a lot of it has to do with how they are raised, but I also know that sometimes no matter how well some kids are raised, some just turn out to be unmoral adults for some reason or another. Anyway, I have heard that pigs are pretty intelligent animals. I have never really been around pigs much, except at petting zoos when growing up. Are they pretty smart animals? I'm sure some are even smarter than the average human! LoL... just kidding. Hope you have a wonderful day & a nice week too. Take care.

talking about pets, we got a bunch.. hahaha.. Way back then, just like you, we only had a dog. I really loved dogs especially when i was a kid. when i started studying and working, i never had time to take care of them. right now we had three dogs. then one rainy night, my sister found a stray kitten. i don't know but it can't go on its own yet so we took care of it. now she's really big and have given birth a lot of times. so we around ten cats here. and the numbers are still growing! on top of that, we got two turtles, fish and african birds. see?? we got a zoo!! LOLz

We have 7 fish in aquariums. We used to have dogs and some chicken as well but no one wanted to care for them so the upkeep became taxing. Aquariums are easier to manage because the species of fish that we have are the kind that don't need very clear water. Also, the filtration system allows us to just clean out the filter a few times a month.
The downside of having fish for pets is that I don't really get to "bond" with them I can't hold them or play with them like I used to with my dogs.
I think it's great that you allow your kids to take care of their own pets. In a way, it teaches them to be more responsible.
