I could have been hurt seriously

Okay as I stated in another discussion I got things done fast here due to my new DSl and got bored after some light gardening and what not. So I looked at my ceiling fan in my dining room. Man was that thing ever coated with dust. Well I started to dust it off and lo and behold, there were many screws loose that hold the blades in place. Some of the blades were nearly off the brackets that hold them in place. I had always wondered why it made a sort of clicking sound when it was turned on. Now I know. It was the blades clacking against the brackets due to be so loose. SO I tightened them all down and finished dusting and washing them off. I could have been hurt had one of the blades fell off or even dad or my wife could have been hurt. We've lived here for 5 years and never noticed that they were losse. So have you had anything along these lines happen in your household at all? Was it something that if not corrected right away that it could have hurt anyone in the house?

Wow, Grandpa I'm sorry about that. Well, at our old house my mom was always smelling gas and she thought there was as gas leak. Well none of us could ever smell it and she thought she was thinking of things in her head then. Well come to find out that the gas line was partial broken and one day we all smelled gas in the old house. Well, we had a plumber come out to fix it as the city said it was our responsibility because it was on our land. Anyway, the plumber said the flick of a light switch, or the striking of a lighter/match could have blown the whole house up! And to think we were living there for about five or more years with that small gas leak!

Oh I hate the smell of natural gas. Even worse is the smell of humans gas. HAHAHA! Anyhow I had a Great Dane many years ago and the firdst time I tried to bathe it outside I tied her to the gas light pole. Sure enough as soon as the water hit her she bolted ripping the pole from the ground and causing a huge gas leak.

Wow, that sounds bad, too. How did you fix the gas leak? Did you have to call a plumber too?

That would have been awful had something happen to you or your family. Our home is fairly new and we haven't had any problems so far. I remember when we were still renting the electrcal wiring were so bad that the wires started to burn in the walls and started a fire in my kids room. Luckily we were in the room and smelt the burning, that was a close call.I'm just glad you decided to dust that fan when you did.

Speaky of dusty ceiling fans in the dining room. A few weeks ago when it was hot in my neck of the woods. I turned the ceiling fan on before I cleaned it. Duh, you should have seen the dust fly. I did call myself a few choice names, hehe. Congrats on you DSL, have fun. I have only had a computer for 2 yrs and have always had high speed. Dial up would drive me batty, I wouldn't have the patience for it.

and they would not have just "fallen off" but they would have been flung off at a good velocity. Me thinks your Guardian Angel whispered into your ear to dust up there today - so that you would discover the potential danger and correct it.

Oh my, yes I have the exact same thing actually. Only my fan is directly above my bed. And we have the fan on just about every night. That would have been really bad had it come off in the middle of the night. Talk about a rude awakening!!
Now we check them often.

You wouldn't believe how losse two of the blades were. One actually had one of the screws nearly free. Your mom would have freaked out. Now I know to check them ever so often.

That sounds about like something that would happen around here. Our ceiling fan makes a noise sometimes too but we have checked the bulbs and the blades and everything seems to be tightened up correctly. I think ours just makes a noise from age. They are ten years old. I'm glad you found yours in time.

I had a ceiling light fixture in my bathroom that somehow became loose. One day it fell, landing partway on the toilet seat, and leaving a big dent. If anyone had been on that toilet, the fixture would have landed on their head, and it could have been bad. We never knew it was loose until it fell, so we are lucky no one got hurt.

That adds meaning to the phrase, "scared the crap out of me"
doesn't it? This is why from now on I am checking that thing
monthly at least for safety reasons.

I'm glad you posted this! I've lived in places where the fans clacked a lot and now I know that I have to fix it right away!
The house I just bought has all new fans-ancient house, new fans!-but I'll remember that when they start to make noise, thanks!!

Mine has 5 blades and each one has 3 screws in it. 13 of them were loose and a few were almost completely out. YIKES! This was too close. Now I will check the screws about once a month. That's if my mind can recall that. You're very welcome also.

Yikes! I'm glad you noticed before anything serious happened.
That would probably happen to me, though. I never think to get up and dust the things. I would think they should be checked periodically as I'm sure all that vibration while spinning can loosen things occasionally.

After we remodeled our bathroom, we were in the finishing up stage, and there was a broken tile still on the wall.. I was washing down the tile early one morning and accidentally caught it across my ring finger and almost cut it off.. I had a gash big enough to have to have at least a couple of stitches, which was big enough considering it was just a finger, but I cleaned it really good with peroxide and bandaged it really tight.. It healed well but still has a scar.. I have done many home repairs over the years but never in my life did I know that ceramic tile was this razor sharp..

Glad you posted this. I never thought that some sounds a ceiling fan might mean loose blades. I've looked at whether or not it was loose from the ceiling, but not the blades. Guess I'll have to check that.
When I first married my hubby and moved into his house that he'd have for 20+ years, I walked onto the side porch and leaned on the railing and almost fell. He said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you. The railing is loose."
That weekend, I had one of our neighbors take down the railing. Better to have none (which is obvious), than have one that's loose but looks okay.

I never knew it weither till i tightened them up then that
noise dissapeared. Oh no. My front deck has a railing that
needs to be mounted to the house soon. I did not do this
when it was installed to avoid having to get a permit.

Oh man, now we have a fan right over the top of our bed that makes a ticking sound and I'm going to have to jump off here straight away, move the bed and check the top of the fan. Guess I should thank you, never thought of checking the screws...lol!

Wow, glad you found these my friend before it ended up hurting someone. I know that with things in life, things like this are things you may not always consider checking out, and fixing if need be. But this could be a warning for others to check out too, as you never know.

I had a door that the top hinge was basically out of the wall, I kept saying that I needed to get it fixed (but didn't know how to fix it myself.) I finally got a handyman in who did it, and told me how to do it. I said I'd call a handyman if it did it again.

I wonder how the young generation would relate to this. They came to this worlds with fans grilled. We had the antique looking ceiling fan with flowered lights, though its cozy cool, it gives me the creep every time I look at it. Maybe because I heard many stories of the fan thing when I was a kid. That fan never last, we took it off before something like that could happen.
You're lucky Granpa Bob you caught it in that state. Maybe I should switch to DSL too to have those precious time.
