Trouble linking to "buddy's" posts...

When I check my email and want to respond to a buddy's post, I click the link and am brought to the discussion. If I sign-in immediately, I lose the discussion (and must search, sometimes without luck) and if I try to reply and then sign-in, my reply disappears and I must start again. And suggestions/help to make this a more seamless process? (thought-process...how do you do it? :)
