I think being willing to compromise, and accepting that your partner's quirks and ways of doing things are as important to him or her as yours are to you. It helps to use humor to ease tension, rather than bickering when you have differences.

tolerance is essential ion this world. I would not say compromise but tolerance is a better word. We need to have self respect in any relation else we lose oursleves which causes more harm the help us.
