Strangest phobias

What is the most bizarre phobia you have come across either in yourself, or in another person? I think the strangest one I have encountered is somebody who had a full-blown phobia of zips, ribbons/ties, shoelaces, buttons, velcro - anything that fastens clothes.

I'm terrified of toy balls being thrown around...bouncy balls, basket balls, beach balls...doesn't matter, it scares me. My other odd quirk is that having balloons outside scares me. The fear of a ballon getting loose and floating away is just too much to handle.

Thanks for your reply. That's a really interesting phobia. Do you have any idea how it began, or is it just one of those inexplicable things?

LOL...I think the ball one came about after I gave a friend's little sister two black eyes by accidentally hitting her in the face with a volley ball, before that I'd been the best pop fly catcher on my softball team. The balloon one goes back to when I was 3 or 4 and proudly wandered around with a balloon tied to my wrist but it was on my right hand and when I sat down to eat I tried to switch it to my left hand on my own but it blew away...I cried and cried.

Thanks for your reply and sorry I'm late in commenting. I suppose the cause for most of our phobias is locked in childhood. I don't have any outrageously unusual ones, but I do have a terror of thunderstorms after being in a house next door to one that was hit by lightning, and I also have a terror of wasps - I have never been stung, but when I was about 3 I got one stuck in my hair. I can still hear the constant and frantic buzzing of this wasp today (51 years later!!!) as it got more tangled in my hair whilst trying to escape - I was very luck not to have been stung.

My wife-LOL She has a fear of loud bass from a home stereo system. When she feels the bass on her chest, she can't breath. It's not a wimpy stereo either. I have 4ft. Yamaha concert series speakers, 15" woofer, 36" horn, and along with a high power amp of 250 watts per channel and an equalizer it rocks, also it sends pictures of the walls.

Strangely enough I can identify with that, even though I love loud music. I too feel something go weird in my chest when listening on a powerful hi-fi to very bassy loud music - lightning does exactly the same to me, gives me that same chesty feeling when it strikes/flashes.

I don't know how strange it is but I am afraid of going in to mountains. I used to think it was really cool and then we were on vacation about 6 years ago and I had a panic attack inside of a mountain. I don't know why I guess I just felt really confined or something. I thought it was jut a fluke and a one time thing but last year we were visiting my sister in Texas and we were going to go in to this mountain and just as I started to go in my heart started beating and I started to sweat and I felt like I was going to die so I ended up not going in. I hope to some day get over this.

I used to work with a girl who had a phobia about cats. The background to this is that she came from a Muslim Pakistani family, and apparently there's a cultural prejudice against having pets in the house (thought to be unhygienic if I remember her explanation correctly). In addition to this existing prejudice, she said that when she was a small girl walking to school she used to be hissed at regularly by her neighbour's bad-tempered cat.

My weirdest phobia would have to be...... I'm afraid to touch certain house plants or stick my hands in weeds.
