Okay I had a crash recently and it ticked me off to no ends losing a ton of photos I had but did nor add to a dsic etc. This occured after I downloaded and installed Windows Service Pack 3. I started a discussion along the lines of the crash and another member responded she also had problems with the same download. This member has decided not to install it again at this time. Now my puter is asking me to download it again and I am not going to do it just yet out of fear of yet another crash. I had to reset my puter back to manufacturer settings like I had just bought it having to reinstall all my hardware as well. Now is there a major problem with this service pack or what? What exactly is this pack do, or what is it for anyhow? Has anyone else had this problem with the service pack 3 install etc?

I don't have the windows service pack three installed on my computer. alot of people recommend that we do all of the windows updates but I noticed alot of times when I did the updates and installations, I also had computer problems also. I really don't think we need all of those updates because my computer runs just fines without all of them. I turned my windows updates off to keep them from installing on their own.

I have what's called "Windows Live OneCare on my puter as part of my DSL server Qwest. Well this bites now. I just turned off the updates. Now I get a warning from the Windows Live OneCare telling me turn them on or I am threat of internet issues etc. I am leaving it this way for the time and see what transpires.

I get those types of warnings also but you will be fine, believe me, if you at least have some kind of antivirus software installed on your computer. You will have nothing to worry about. I have had mine turned off for years now and everything is just fine.

Service packs are accumulated regular updates in one package. It a good idea actually to update to this SP because it makes our window more stable and secure. I have updated my Win XP with SP3 and so far have no problem with it. I still receive from time to time updates, I have set mine to "prompt me when it is available and prompt me before install" this way I would know which one did update or not.
The only problem I encounter with this is when I use WinXP setup disc with built-in SP3 to setup a new computer. It cannot detect my audio device. But using disc with SP2 did the job. Maybe SP3 is choosy in device driver compliance than the earlier released.
I'm really wondering why it happened to you?

When it crashed I stared the puter in prompt mode and it froze when it showed all the WIN 32 drivers or something like that. The puter is running fine right now without the SP3 installed so I may wait a bit out of fear as I stated in the discussion. Thanks bunches for the help and info as well.

I think you reacted too soon. You could do the "boot last known good" in that same prompt mode. Anyway its history now.
I you don't feel updating now its ok, just make sure you have a trusted anti-virus and firewall to be safe. Good luck Grandpa Bob.

I tried rebooting from last know good set up. I tried rebooting to the latest saved back up. Windows would not do anything at all except fopr reboot to manufactureres settings so that was my one and only choice. I actually laughed as I told my wife I wanted a new computer as this one crashed. She knows I am fairly puter litterate so she said yeah right fix it old man.

The same thing happened to me and I had to redo my pc too. Now I shut off automatic updates, and I will go to "Tools - Windows Update" and decide what downloads I want. I will not reinstall the SP3. I herd it had something to do with "Vista" and all I know is many people are having trouble with it. I also downloaded the "FireFox" browser and I am happier with this over IE7 which is still on my computer - I can use either browser.

My virus protection tells me the same thing, I just ignore it, the program is just trying to get you to download all the latest updates. It took me a very long time to redo everything on my pc. I don't want to go through that again.

Oh yes, you bet!
My computer is a CURRENT VICTIM of SP3. This is how Microsoft treats you even when you are using ORIGINAL Windows.
So now, I am on a "stolen" computer and my own computer is still being fixed.
Way to go Microsoft, you just keep getting better.

Nope, haven't started any discussion for some time. I didn't partly because I don't have time to respond... so might as well not.
After installing SP3, it just loops forever at startup.

Not that I know of AGB but I have heard of it! i am pretty sure my other half said I didn't need to install it on mine as I have vista. Do you by any chance have a Hewlett Packard computer? I have found this site that says HP machines with AMD processors are having reboot problems with the wsp3. I have put in the link in case it is of any help!

Hi Grandpa Bob, like my fried ferdzNK said, you reinstalled your stuff too soon. Anyway here's the deal: Whenever we download & update a Service Pack, it's supposed to make Windows more stable & all like my friend ferdzNk mentioned. Another thing it does is also it might slow down your computer due to more resource requirements. So the crash thingy might be due to this. If you feel it's taking too much resources, just go to the Add/Remove programs under Control Panel. You should find it there. Once you remove the SP3 update, it would run smoother. The same goes with old computers upgrading from Xp SP1 to XP SP2

I know all this. I am somewhat good with puter things and I could not even get into window to remove programs due to the crash. The crash happened as I rebooted the puter right after the install. The crash was due to some errors in the WIN 32 files of some sort is what caused it. But I set the puter back to manufacture settings and it's fine. I've added all my hardware and software and it's running great. I am going to avoid SP3 for now.

Oh ok, I thought you weren't aware of that. Ok ok, it crashed & you couldn't go in, now I get it. Well, anyway I've been contemplating whether to update mine to SP3 but haven't really got down to it yet. Maybe I'll just leave it be at the moment until I come back as I'll be out of town this weekend. Good to hear that all's well & you're puter is up & running now. Cheers!~

Ooh, ouch! That's why I didn't install it. I once installed a Service Pack 2 on a Service Pack 1 computer and ever after that it would take about 5 minutes to load a program. I will never do that again!

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Hubby asked if you are using Windows Vista? Right now, we are using Windows XP since it has been compatible to all our programs that we have downloaded and purchased unlike with the Vista, it is still new somehow and there are still a lot of bugs with Vista. Manufacturers are still in the process of perfecting this operating system even it is already out in the market. There would always be problems because it was not yet perfected unlike Windows 98 and XP. What is happening now is that they are testing Vista with consumers and of course, consumers will report on the problems being encountered; then they will give you solutions after solutions until consumer hand in hand with manufacturer find the real solution for the problem. This is what had happened to Windows 98 and Xp before and it is what is happening to Vista now; however, with 98 and Xp, they are already been perfected but of course manufacturers needed to upgrade that is why, we have vista now. So, if you have the Vista, then that is why you're having problems. Better downgrade your OS to XP for now and wait for a few weeks and upgrade it to Vista.
Gosh, that is how I remember what hubby is telling me to say to you. haha..I hope I got the words right and I hope I told him the problem right since I am just talking to him on the phone at the moment.
Take Care and God Bless! Happy Mylotting!

i actually installed this service pack with the vista OS. though my computer didn't crash, it removed my sound driver. we had to call the manufacturer and have them walk us through downloading a new program so that we could hear again.

Im not sure if my pc has already downloaded a sp3 now or not? Dumb question, I have a dell and mccaffrey conflicts with it, and i wasted money on nortons it was joke and did nothing. But was more of a nusiance.
Is there a good anti virus out there? If we cannot ask this here, someone can send a answer to my email.
thanks, Lish

I've upgraded to service pack 3 and it went well. My computer is faster, more stable and can handle multitasking smoother than before. My advise would be check out the site where you downloaded the pack. I downloaded the pack from a reputable site not microsoft though, it has about 315 - 318mb of it. I checked the file for corruption before installing it and most importantly I back-up my file to be sure.
