This is a discussion of great concern and interest and the world in gereral have not come to an agreement due to ethical disagreement and most especially religious belief and law of nature.
Christians does not agree on this subject when it comes to practice on human. It was widely practiced on animals worldwide due to their unability to express their sufferings and pain like humans do. We show mercy on our pets when we see that they are really suffering and all treatments fails to make them recover from the illness.
I had a German Shepherd dog (imported from Germany and spent a lot for the airlifting and other cost)had to put to sleep last May 15, 2008. He was only 8 years old and became a part of the family. This dog touched our lives in many ways. He won many prices in dog shows (SG1). He was a great guard ( a faithful and honest guard on duty 24/7 and loved us unconditionally) and was so attached to the family. We found such intelligence in this dog that was uncommon. He could easily sense between a good person or evil minded one. He was really special.
About six months ago we noticed a big wound in his paw. Normal treatment was given but the wound does not heal. Later strong antibiotics and most expensive ointments were applied but the situation became worse. He was not responding to any treatment. The only option left was amputation. The veterinarian believe it is due to cancer or dibetic and amputation will further complicate and the dog will suffer further. Herbal treatment was given to him as a last effort, but that could not make any differance.
Everyday we carry him up and down from his cage for cleaning the worsening wound and apply antibiotic spray. We know he is slowly sinking and the only best thing we could do is to give the best food that he loved. He could finish 2 roasted chicken a day. Nothing is too much coz he given us a lot of blessings. He was a great stud and produced many champion generation. He had the majestic look and he was the pride of Royal Guard Kennel. Those last days, we could see the face of evil in his wounds that got spread half of his leg, we know he is in deep pain and he can't take it anymore. After consulting with the vet and friends the family has decided to show mercy and put him to sleep from further pain and suffering. It was one of the most painful decision we have made. It was like losing a family member.
The process known as euthanasia was simple, he jsut went to deep sleep without any struggle or pain. Obsolutely there was no shaking or not even a slight movement at all. All got over in less than 2 minute. The vet checked and made sure his heartbeat is completely stopped. We said goodbye to our beloved friend but he will live in our hearts forever.....
We really miss you Yambo.... (his picture is posted on the left side of this page)

Euthanasia is a touchy subject and I think you made the right decision in having your very close friend euthanized to spare him of the pain and agony. I myself would never allow anyone the pain of euthanizing me when it should happen to me and the pain becomes so severe that it would be torture for my loved ones to see me suffer. I think that when the time comes for me to go then I will go. Any pain that will accompany that would surely be pain that is well-deserved. No euthanasia for this old bugger.
