What is the origin of evil?

In the Christian faith the Bible teaches us that God created all things and He called them good. So I wonder where did evil come from? Do you think God created evil also? If not, how did it get into the world? I know the story of the fallen angel Lucifer--but did God create him, too? If God created him, how could he go bad? Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I'm probably going to get some of this wrong, so I apologize to you and to anyone else who might have a better answer and better reasoning.
Yes - angels are created beings. But, God has always allowed freewill, even with angels. Lucifer chose to reject God. That rejection is evil - God did not create it. He permitted it. The act of rejecting the Almighty is evil and the behaviors brought on by that rejection are evil, but they aren't "created".
God doesn't want hostages in Heaven - he wants people who want to obey Him there. He wants them to find Him on their own - not be forced to obey Him. That's the freedom of Christianity, as I see it. We are free to obey and free to make mistakes with the knowledge that admitting those mistakes and requesting forgiveness will be as cleansing as new birth. But, we are also free to reject God as did Lucifer. We are not bound as slaves, but free to make our own choices.
Anyway, that's my understanding of it. Evil is simply the opposite of good - not created, but definitely caused by someone who was created.

I understand your answer and agree with you. I guess my question is where did the evil come from that we could choose it? Was evil "born" when Lucifer rejected God/good? Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

I think you're right. God created us in his own likeness and gave us the ability to think for ourselves and make our own choices (free will). By having the ability to make a choice, you obviously can make the right choices or the wrong ones. Eve had a choice. She was instructed not to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. She chose to do it anyway and introduced sin into the world by doing so. Without free will, she would have obeyed, and so would we all, and therefore, there would be no evil. Mankind brought evil into the world. God simply allows us the freedom to choose to either follow Him, or not. Without that freedom of choice, there would be no evil and we'd live in a perfect world.
That's just my opinion anyway. I could be wrong. But that's what I believe.

I do not really believe in the concept of "good" and "evil". Yes, I think people can do "good" things, but I don't think anything or anyone is really "evil"... they may do things that are bad, illegal, or that go against societies idea of what is moral, but I wouldn't call anyone "evil."

That is an interesing idea. What do you think of those people that seem to have no remorse for the "bad" things they do--like Charles Manson, Ted Bundy or Hitler?
My belief in evil comes not only from my religious beliefs, but also some experiences and "feelings" I have had that were weird and I had no explanation for them. I can only describe the feelings as awful. Thanks for your reply.

People like that have mental illnesses. I'm not saying I think it is wrong to call them "evil" if someone wants to, but I would just say they have a poor moral compass, probably as a result of their mental problems. I guess I find it hard to believe that people who do things like that and seem to feel no remorse are perfectly "right" in the head, you know?

In my opinion, man has decided what is good or evil. It depends on the society or period that you live/lived in. What was sinful and evil in the 18th century is perfectly acceptable in todays world.
One thing I do know, and you have to agree with....
...without evil, we would never know good.

You are right. We have to have the opposite to appreciate things. I guess, then if we have to have evil to know what good is, then God created evil?

Yes my dear God created Lucifer. He was a beautiful Angel. If you read the bible it tells you how Lucifer gather some of the Angels in Heaven and wanted to over throw God. God did not stands for this so he cast Lucifer and his friends out of heaven and told them that they will walk the earth. Lucifer is evilous and he can also give you good. The only thing that the devil cannot do is to breathe the breathe of life. So that is how evil started when God throw out Lucifer out of Heaven.

You have stated what I have been taught, also. But the only reference to the name Lucifer in the Bible is Isaiah 14:12 and most Bibles say that refers to the King of Babylon. Do you know of other references? I would appreciate knowing them. Thanks.

If my catholic upbringing recollection is correct,
God created the angels and one of them was named
Michealangelo whom turned evil and became Lucifer.

God created all things. Included in His wonderful creation are the angel. the most beautiful and wise angel is named Lucifer. He is the top angel among all angels, and he was assigned to rule in the universe.but one day this angel became proud and he wants to be equal with God. He became rebellious. that's why he became fallen angel and his name was change to satan. One-third of the angel followed him. Satan is God's enemy and adversary. the fallen angels who followed him became satan's evil forces of darkness, these are the evil spirits in the air and demons in the sea. Satan, evil spirits and demons are working together to destroy God's intention...When God moves, Satan also moves to destroy..Satan is very evil. So since the world in his hands until now..this is why the world is so chaotic, full of violence, many evil things are happening because the whole world lies in the hands of the evil one..BUT God is a victorious God. He can NEVER be defeated. He's intention is to RECOVER the earth, the whole world from the hands of satan...He is powerful than Satan because He is God. But why dont God use His power to defeat the enemy? God is the creator and satan is mere creature..God wanted that same creature will defeat the evil creature, satan...So God created man in His image and likeness so that man may express God and deal with God's enemy..And God chose a group of people who will be one with Him for HIs expression and dominion. That's why He wanted to save people. He wanted people to believe in the Son of God--JESUS, so that people with have God's life aside from human life. This group of people who has the life of God, who grow and mature in life and expresses God in their daily living and are one with God is called the church, the corporate believers, which is the Body of Christ..This is God's full expression on earth and the creature to defeat the enemy. The whole story is from Genesis to Revelation..

Okay, so if you build a robot, you would specifically c that what you want the robo to do, thats what it does, and obeys you, coz u have made it in such a way and it has got no mind of its own, nothing on its own, but to follow and listen and do what ever you want, thats how its programmed. But could you do that will ur children? they r your children and u have produced them, but can you make them do what you want to? NO. You cant, they have their own mind and have their own free will. So its also about satan. God created him along with all the other angels, and gave them super human powers, including free will, so what ever the thought that came to satan, he acted upon it. Its not God that created evil or rooted it, satan became evil. And so he is misleading...

the evil comes or starts from the story of ADAM and Eve (peace be upon them) ..... when satan the devil mislead them, on that day he (satan) challanged Allah that he will try to mislead his people ...

Deuteronomy 32:4-5 (Today's New International Version)
4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect,
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong,
upright and just is he.
5 They are corrupt and not his children;
to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.
From these verses and the rest of the Bible we can put the puzzle together of how evil came into the world. God created all the angels including the one that became Satan the Devil. For a time all went well. But just like an honest man can later become corrupt and turn to a life of crime, this angel acted on evil thoughts that came into his head. He could have rejected the evil thoughts and not acted on them but he did. Then he persuaded Eve into joining his group.
Neither we nor the angels are robots that are programmed to think and act in a certain way. We are wonderfully made with the ability to think for ourselves and to chhose for ourselves as we wish. But with this great gift comes great responsibility and grave consequences if misused.
But not to be too overly concerned. As we see the results of both using this great gift correctly and incorrectly, we learn. Eventually only those that use the gift in the correct way will continue to live and not just for a while but eternally. Evil ones will be executed and no longer exist. All will be well again. This allowance will only be tolerated once. In the new world any that choose to act on evil again will be promply executed and not allowed to repeat what we are experiencing again.

Hello Susieq223!
I am sorry I could never answer this question but I think the 1st person that responded to this discussion made a good point, that without evil we would not know what good is because of course we would have nothing to compare it to.
My reason for coming to this discussion, your last discussion in many months, is because I just read a discussion started by Pyewacket in which she ask for everyone's prayers in finding your beloved Sammy and I just wanted you to know that my prayers are with you and in all honesty I believe Sammy will return.
I lost my beloved cat the morning after we moved and was so distressed thinking maybe he had somehow traveled all the way across town to the next town where we had just moved from and lo and behold, I looked up later and there he was staring me in the face from the roof of our new garage. I know animals have a remarkable way of finding their way back and I am sure Sammy will find his way back to you too!
Good luck and I will continue to pray for Sammy's safe return!
