Do you start writing something and not finish it?

I love to write, I really do. However I have this horrible habit of going full force into something and getting only to a certain point before I decide to abandon whatever I'm working on. I usually feel like my story is boring and going nowhere so I give up and don't write anything more until another idea strikes me and I start writing on that only to stop writing on that one too. It's a pretty viscious cycle. I wish I could break it but I never feel like my writing is good enough. Do you experience this too? How do you break the habit? Do you have any general advice?

Sometimes I experience this too. But often, when I have to write something, I want to finish it as soon as possible and make it simple and short. Because I hate it when I lose my interest and topic in writing.

I agree with you and the advice of writing short and simple really works.

i used to write a lot of poems when i was in high school. you know, that time in your life when your emotions are really intense and everything is extremely important. every now and then, i try to jot down some feelings or thoughts that i'm having, but find that i forget where i put them. its interesting to pick up a notepad that i haven't seen in months and find a half thought out idea. but when i really feel the need to sit down and write, i try to create my optimal writing atmosphere. no outside noise, some soft music, turn the phone off, burn some incense or light a candle, and relax. as long as your mind is racing, you will never be able to concentrate on any one thing. good luck!

There are many times that I start Writing something, and will put it down, and never end up finishing it due to forgetting what I was wanting to portray, or thinking it will not be interesting enough for anyone else wanting to read. Especially if it is something that I would Love to eventually submit somewhere for pay as well. So you are far from the only one.

I'm no famous writer or anything, but I'd like to offer some advice anyway, because I believe in encouraging budding writers. A piece of advice I might offer is...keep the work short. You can always add to it later. Write it quick, in a burst of energy, but make sure you finish it fairly soon before boredom or despair sets in. If it rambles out of control, you could lose interest or hope in the work. Concentrate on finishing one project at a time. Perhaps map out the bare details of the story in your mind beforehand; and then write quick when the inspiration kicks in, not finishing until you have much of the work done. As I say, you can always add to it later, and turn a short story into a series of stories, or full novel. Don't overdecorate the story; keep the language simple, and the ideas brief, or the story could spiral wildly out of control. You can always add or edit or improve later. Don't worry if you don't think your writing is good enough; who knows...others may disagree with this assessment very much. Write for you to begin with; writing is cathartic. Write about something very close to you, about something that makes you feel passionate, maybe something that happened to you. Many first writings are autobiographical. Have fun. All the very best of luck to you.

I love to write to. I've been so busy lately though writing up articles that my fictional writing has gone nowhere lately and I really miss it. Yes true at least with article writing, I'm still writing and I finish them to the end, but I so much prefer my fiction writing as it gets the imagination sparking. I have scores of short stories that I did finish writing, then I have notes to myself of story ideas and whenever the "muse" hits will write them...It's my novel ideas that I need to buckle down and write....it's not for lack of motivation or inspiration but time factor. My article writing since I do get paid for it NOW has taken over. Anyway, a few nights ago, I said nuts to this..that even if I only write a half hour of one of my novels, I'm going to do that...so I've been doing that lately..it's a promise to myself to finish them. I think the real key...no matter how little time you have to devote to your writing...JUST DO IT a little bit everyday..that's what I plan to do for now on

I have the same problem as you do. Sometime I start to write songs or poems but when I lose the inspiration I end up writing something with no end. I've also attempted a thousand times to write a novel but always lose the time to finish it. In fact I'm writing a new novel right now it's something about a past love. I've already written the outline but just like always I don't have enough time actually write it. But I'm going to finish this one for sure because I plan it to give it to that person as a Christmas gift. I want her to remember how our love used to be and keep all the memories. So based from my experience it would be helpful for you to have someone to dedicate it to because that would keep you working on it. Another would be give yourself a deadline so you'll never slack off while working on it. It would also be helpful for you to find someone who will support you while you're working on a certain piece such as friends. You can also try to find an editor who will read through your work and tell you its flaws, then you can improve it from there. Good luck! Keep writing and never lose hope, who knows that one piece you perceive to be your weakest work might actually have the power to capture the interest of many.

Try writing short, short or flash fiction. Condense your story ideas into a few hundred words and then you can go back to it later and expand if you want. I started doing that a long time ago and now pretty much all my fiction is of the short, short variety.

I'm exactly like you. I get really into something and persue it for a bit then drop off on it. My problem is I get stuck. Stuck on the plot or something else. I have several stories that will never be finished because of that. It's sad really.... Oh well. I've never really broken that habit either. Sorry I'm kinda bad with advice. lol

I get that, I come up with an idea I think is really good but after a few days I lose confidence in it and just give up. I'd like to be able to write short stories at least and publish them even if it's only on a blog but I seem to have lost the knack. When I was a child I could write pages and pages, but now I seem to have lost the confidence.

I can only afford to write poems, I have not tried writing short stories and even one act plays. I dont know if my patience could afford that long stories and I dont have much imagination on things and happenings in life. The poems I write are just personal experiences and things that relate to my life. Have a nice day and take care. Happy mylotting.

I do have this kind of habit just as what you said easily give up to what we have determinated.I often confronted with the situation just as what you like ,have the impulse to write somteing ,but then when you start writing them then in the half way stoped for the reason that it is so boring. I do believe this is a bad habit .as for how to overcome it my suggestion is to have a strong will .we can do whatever we want if our willings are strong enough..when you have finished you can give yourself some rewards.

hi, actually i have the same dilemma with you. I love to write love story for teens, but until now i cant finish it yet. I have no mood to continue the story... and get confuse how to bring the character more to the climax. Almost its caused by mood. Usually at the beginning, im really enthusiastic to start it, but when the story moves to the more serious part, even confuse how to express the feeling there. Im also easily distracted by people around me, so i easily stop my work to finish it. I did finish some stories that i made only for few days without people who distracted me. Anyway, just give your concentrate totally to your story and never stop to type them. Distraction may make you takes more time to finish the story. Hmm... That;s all i wanna say. Take care

I do this a lot too but that's because I'm too busy with work and I have no time to write. I would say, make it into a short story first before you make it bigger. That way you'll have a smaller version of your plot so it's easier to expand on. Some people find it helpful to make outlines for their stories but I find it difficult to write when it's outlined. It's different for everyone, it won't hurt to try it. You should get a second opinion on your stories. Your stories may seem boring to you but others may think differently. It may give you inspiration to continue writing.

I have that attitude too, and I never finish anything except my short poems! lol! I always wanted to write a story but like you, I end up leaving my work undone for several reasons! I also don't know what will help me to finish, I wish soon I will be able to come up even with one accomplished output!LOL!

I do the same thing, however my reason for stopping is different than yours. Usually I come to a brain fart, I can't think of how to continue, or any idea at all for that matter. Then sometimes I get sidetracked by something, maybe my grandmother asks me to do something for her, or maybe I have to do something for my kids, then when I get back to my writing I have no ideas and I can't find the groove that I once had. I do a lot of writing at night, and that is bad too, because I will get tired and stop, then when I get up the next day my mind is a million miles from what I was writing. If you find a way to overcome this, let me know. I could sure use that bit of information!!!

Yes, I have done this. Not because I didn't think it was good, but because I got busy or lost interest. I have an idea in my head right now for a story, but have not yet had time to put it to paper. When I first started writing I never showed it to anyone. It was too personal and I assumed it was not very good. After I did show a couple of people they reacted with a lot of support and now I tend to pursue it a bit more. After that I think for me the turning point was an internal one in which I said I CAN do this. I think everybody has self doubts, you have to remember that you never know what you can do until you do it. When I was writing a lot I found that writing when nobody was around and it was quiet really helped my creative juices flow. I also used it as an outlet for whatever was in my mind so it was also cathartic. Art comes from within, if you doubt yourself it makes it hard to accomplish anything. Don't throw out those things you start, someday you may want to revisit and finish them. Good luck with your writing.
