I live in Ontario half the year, and Arizona the other half. In Ontario I have access to a wonderful cafe where I can buy beans, and they'll grine them for me. In Arizona I don't have access to a place like that. When my sister in Ontario gave me a coffee grinder for Christmaas I decided to leave it at my house in Arizona, and bring beans from The Second Cup when I go down there, to grind fresh in AZ, because here in Ontario I can buy the beans and have them ground at the cae, when I want them. I thought it was best to keep the grinder where I needed it the most.

I will drink it either way, and honestly, I would probably not notice the difference in a taste test. However, I do like to buy beans and grind it myself. This is partly because I like to have several kinds open, and I think it stays fresher this way.
That said, I will also admit that I do like the K-cups for my coffee maker, they are already ground and stay fresh until used. But when I use my own coffee, I will usually grind the beans.

Instant and pre-ground taste about the same to me, but I'm not really a discerning coffee drinker. I have never ground my own, but I would imagine it would be best that way, since things always tend to be better when you do it yourself, fresh. For example, I prefer baking my own bread to buying it in the store, because it's not only cheaper, but I can choose what goes into it and generally make it taste better. And it's probably better for you since it doesn't have any preservatives and stuff. You never really truly know what's going into stuff that's been pre-made in some factory - could be pesticide, or any number of gross things... Mostly I don't think about it but now that you mention do-it-yourself coffee, I happened to think about that stuff.
