I have seen several posts about homeless, it is hard for me to understand why someone would have to be homeless, and on the street with all the help there is out there. Shelters, section 8 housing, HUD housing, welfare, places for the people with mental health issues.
Could it be that they are out there because that is where they choose to be, that they have to make a decision to pay rent or buy that next bottle of booze or the drug of their choice on that day.
We lived in a large city where there was tons of homeless, they decided to congregate in a parking lot, finally the city went there to try and see what was happening that so many are all of a sudden on the street. What they found was that all but a few with mental problems was there because that is where they wanted to be. Some don't like the idea that a job would tie them down, or they have drinking problems, but most was there because drugs took their money.
They was packed up and sent on their way, we need to find out why there are so many laying around on the streets and under overpasses and move them out. Nothing hurts a city when they trying to get business to come to their town or people looking to vacation there as streets full of homeless people.
So what is your take on the homeless, you believe there is no help out there for them, what with all the government programs or that they are there because that is where they chose to be?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I'm sorry but the "help" that is available is BULLSHYT! Shelters DO NOT have enough beds, the government DOES NOT do anything to help, and there just ISNT help period..
Been there myself and getting out of that situation is NOT easy and the longer one is stuck in that position the harder it becomes to get out of it..

Hi bdugas, it's hard to understand why someone would be homeless period! Yes, there is help out there, as there should be,wanting and getting the help is the problem...there are many issues related to this stigma and it goes back and back and back from the beginning if time. It's a fact, there will always be poverty, there will always be hunger, there will always be homelessness. It is very sad. As to "moving them out" Move them where? If they are not where they are, they'll be somewhere else...In my little part of the world, everytime a proposal is cued for a homeless shelter, the uppercrust say: "NIMBY, Not In My Backyard"...so there goes that!
And yes, many of these poor homeless souls do want to live this way, wether it's a punishment on themselves or an acceptance of being, or mental issues...but many do choose to be where they are for whatever personal reasons...If I could, I'd have a place where they could eat, bathe, and relax if need be...they would have the option of committing to staying and working towards repairing their lives or not...it would be their choice...The mentally challenged would receive the sorely needed services with the stipulation that wherever they may be housed, it would be determined if permanent housing is required and permanent care, and would not be pushed out into the streets because of noninsurance...Come on MyLotters, the US has money to fix this and fix that in other countries, why not begin fixing problems at home? Being an X-Homeless person makes this topic especially hurtful and sensitive. But thank you bdugas for this posting, it needs to be talked about more.

With the economy the way it is going in USA we are going to see more and more homeless people that have lost their homes and cars. They will not choose to be homeless but the reality is that their houses will be in foreclosure and their cars will be repossed and they will have no where to go but in the streets. This applies to the middle income people and senior citizens.

I believe that a lot of the homeless are homeless by choice. Like you say, there is help out there for them but they choice not to get it. I used to feel for the homeless but I don't as much anymore. I watch some of them on the streets and I can't help but think, why not get a job? A lot of them are young and capable to work but don't want to. So I don't feel for those ones anymore. But there are some I still feel for, as the ones that are cripple or old. They may not have as an easy of a time to get help because they have no way to get to the offices that provide the help or they just don't know about the help they are entitled to, like welfare.

It is soo sad how people are homeless. The USA has enough money to get almost every homeless person off the streets, but our government does not approve. Every day thousands of poeple are stuck in the freezing cold, or blazing heat! I could not imagine how hard it must be to live on the streets, i hope that our new president will help this horrible situation, and FAST.

there are so many homeless in our country..just sleeping down the bridges and streets..while during the day they ask on every driver on every red lights...so dangerous and yet they still survive...despite of authorities warning them and even putting them in a welfare homes if no guardian..but i guess some people choose it that way..just as what you had guess...

I don't think the majority of the homeless chose to be homeless. There are circumstances that were beyond their control. Yes, there are programs out there for them but where are they supposed to start looking. They are frustrated and don't know how to go about getting the help they need. People just look down their noses at them and say if they wanted better they could get better. When did people acquire the right to judge another. Who knows someday it may be you who are homeless. Don't say never because there is no one among us who can tell what the future stores for us. There are some who chose to live this way but we don't know the underlying reason why they would chose to live like this.

It depends on the socio-economic status of a country. In advance or 1st world like yours, help is just a phone call away. You gave actually people attending to this sort of problems and when there is an escalation of homeless people, it is so not because of the lack of assistance from the government but lack of cooperation of those people. They chose to be on the street. In a 3rd world however, well its a different facade. The homeless actually, literally shouting for help but officials look at the opposite side the window of their classy vehicle (government issued of course).
