I am thinking of getting a new kitten. I just got new furniture. The cat I have now never scratches furniture or anything else for that matter. How could I keep a new kitten from scratching furniture. I have a scratching post, but I don't know if any of my previous cats have used it. What would you do?

snowy,
teach him like you do your own kids, that what I did, if Kitty would start scratching the sofa,I have a roll of paper, I scare her with it by, hitting on the sofa ( not her) and now she don't scratch. I think we just have to treat them like kids.

yeah, I guess I will. I'm still thinking about the kitten thing. I'm planning a move next year sometime, and I may wait until I move.

Luvstochat has the right idea. You have to be right on top of that kitten until it realizes that scratching the furniture is a no-no. We just got new leather chairs for our dining room table. We just yelled at our cat and chased her away from the chairs whenever she tried to scratch them. It seems like she got the idea, and scratches the old furniture we have, and not the leather chairs. We have also squirted water at her in the past when she was bad. It does work.

Thanks, I will do that if I decide to get the cat. I am really lucky that my other cat is not a scratcher. he's very quiet.

Having a scratching post is good make sure to show it to your kitty. Get you a spray water bottle and whenever the kitty starts clawing somthing she shouldn't spray her she will get the hint. That is what I have been doing with my kittens.

That sounds like something worth investigating. I really don't want my new furniture clawed up.
