No, this is a simple, no, no. I would never do this. There are too many bad things happening. They could be a killer or I could be one... They don't think! I have had people ask me to let them drop me off. But I never get in their car. There is this guy that lives on the same street as I, and he wants to take me to pick up my son from school.. I don't get in his car, and I suggest you and others don't either!

That's so strange that this guy bugs you about that. I once had a guy that insisted on giving me a ride almost everyday and I always said no. He said that one day I will change my mind. I was told to call the police. I didn't, but I should have. Instead, I didn't walk at the same time everyday and eventually I didn't see him anymore. But, I regret not calling the cops about it when I look back.

I certainly agree upon this important subject. Never, never pick up any hitchhiker at ll. They are total strangers that do crime. They might even rob or take advantage of you. And I would never get into any strangers' vehicles at all.

It's against the law where I live to pick up hitchhikers. I don't pick up hitchhikes, but if I see a friend walking I'll pick them up since I know them.

Thanks for responding. As far as I know, where I live it's not illegal except in certain places, like on a freeway. But, that's more of a safety thing.

Thanks Julie. I don't pick them up, either, as I am always alone and who knows what they will do with you when you're alone.

Ha ha. I don't know if you are male or female, but most of the people that have said something weird has happened have been females. And, it was usually when they picked up other females that weird things happened.

One time one of my brothers and me were riding to his house in his truck, since he lived a good hour or more away from me,and we saw a guy on the side of the road walking, and Brian said that since I was with him he would stop and see if he was okay,so we stopped and his car had run out of gas,and he had a gas can and was trying to walk to the gas station,so we gave him a ride to the gas station, and then took him back to the car,he even offered to give us money, but we told him it was no problem,I dont know if that would count as a hitchhiker story, but thats the closest thing to an encounter with a hitchhiker that I have ever had.

Thanks. A lot of people who have responded have shown that not all hitchhikers are crazy. But, you just don't know and that's the problem.

We generally don't recommend picking up hitchhikers as there is always a risk they might be some psycho person. That being said, there are many, many, many quite nice people out there just looking for a ride. Many people use this as a form of cheep travel. I have known many people who have hitch-hiked across many different countries including the U.S. My only personal experience with this is having picked up a woman, who's taxi had just left without her. One night I was on my way to my cousins house, and at a pay-phone. I saw this taxi sitting in front of a KFC. This lady came out with some bags of food and waved to her taxi. The driver drove off. She looked like she was in her early 60's and had chased after the taxi. I walked over and offered to drive her where she needed to go. She was taking dinner to her daughters apartment for her daughter and grandson. It was the complete opposite direction that I was going, but it was only like 2 and a half miles out of the way. She was a very sweet woman and everything was fine. I would always keep in-touch with my instincts and use good judgment.

I don't pick up hitchhikers. Back in the days before cell phones were commonly available if someone was having car trouble I might offer to report their trouble at the gas station down the road, but only after careful consideration because too many criminals have staged phony "need help" situations just to get someone to stop so they could do nasties. One has to temper one's desire to help others with a strong dose of reality.

I was driving late at night through the Navajo nation and I stopped at this one gas station in the middle of nowhere to get gas. There were no buses or taxis in the area and it was really remote. This woman really gave me a sob story and needing a ride. Luckily, I was heading into the opposite direction, so it was easy to say no. It's hard to say no to a woman needing a ride in the middle of the night in a remote area. It's entirely possible that she was doing this for bad reasons; she could have had someone waiting down the road to ambush me.

I never have picked up a hitchhiker at all. I certainly think that this is never safe at all to do that. Hitchhikers will take advantage of you and even rob you. So I would not pick up any hitchhikers at all. I think they are the ones that do crimes and want to hide from cops.

You gotta wonder about people who beg for rides from complete strangers, especially in the city where there is public transportation and taxi cabs.
