A formula for making fertiliser at home?

To make fertiliser at home, I half fill empty pots with dead leaves and leftover portions of vegetables, then fill the pot up with organic fertiliser and soil. I water them every day to keep the soil moist.
My theory is that the bacteria in the fertiliser will decompose the organic stuff to create fertiliser.
Plus me if you think this works. I am open to tips and suggestions.
What fertilisers do you use?

If you want to create an organic liquid fertiliser chop up some stinging nettles (3-4 pounds should do) and leave them in a bucket of water for a fortnight. Top up the bucket if the water evaporates or leaks.
At the end of two weeks, strain off the nettles (put them in your compost) and the disgusting greeny-brown goo you're left with is a nitrogen rich liquid feed, all for free.
