I watched a segment about horse slaughterhouses on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. I like animals, but wouldn't classify myself as an animal rights activist. Watching horses being brutally killed was enough to make me want to do something.
I've never seen such cruelty. Horses were shot in the head using some archaic device that propelled bolts into the foreheads of the horse. The fortunate ones died instantly, but in many instances, the initial bolt didn't kill the horse it merely shocked it, leaving it in pain.
I won't detail another disgusting means of disposing of the horse. This method involved hanging the horse upside down and draining it of blood, some of the horses were alive at the time. It was a horrific site.
Luckily, horse slaughters have been outlawed in the US, but other countries still practice this. A weekend after the Preakness, when horses are superstars, it's sad to see what happens to some horses after their services are no longer profitable.
These former racehorses are auctioned off to many slaughterhouses where they meet a cruel, brutal death.
It's unbelievable that living things can be treated so inhumane.

I too have watched that same segment its a sad cruel thing that happens and it should be stopped all together. Its a good thing that horses cannot be slaughtered in America anymore but they should ban horses crossing the border for slaughter purposes one way or another its an awful thing that makes me sick.
