I bought this from the store today because it was one of the few smaller bromeliads on sale...but this is the thing, I don't know what exactly it is since there are hundreds of different types of bromeliads.
Can someone tell me what this is exactly?

There are a lot of plants labeled as bromeliad. These are the genus names of some of the more commonly available:
Crypthanthus species
Aechmea sp
Guzmania sp
Vriesa sp
Tillandsia sp
Neoregelia sp.
I don't know as much about identifying bromeliads as much as the other plants so I'll check out the plant books and see if I can find something. I'll let you know if I find anything. It might be easier to identify after the flowers have opened.

Thanks! As usually, you're a fab!
I do suspect it's an Aechmea more than a Vriescea after seeing a pic of a bromeliad that looked pretty much like mine.
Also, I think the flowers have already opened. Am not too sure (I really do need to take a closer look though).

Upon closer examination it does look like the flowers have already bloomed. Maybe you will get viable seeds from them. A nice bonus.

It's a bit difficult to tell the exact sub-species unless one is an expert. I used to have a book on gardening by Readers Digest, which used to list even all the sub-species along with their pics. However, I don't have it anymore, else I would have definitely looked it up and told you. Maybe you can check it out on Wikipedia? They sometimes list sub-species of plants too and may have some more information on this.
