once you feel an earthquake get out of the buildings go into open spaces where there will be nothing to fall on you. have a clear head during this calamities having an attack of panic won't help you it will only cause you much danger.

Earthquake stay not longer time may be 30 second or 1 minute or 2 minute. So keep calm and do not nervous. If it happen at day time and you are in road of market place, run to a safer place to road and far from high rise. If you are in a high rise building and cannot go to safer open place then stand near piller or strong place of the room. If you live in ground floor then come out from room and run to a open place where there is no multistoried building. Take your kids with you and recite your religious book's chapter and seek help of God or your Creator !

I think this is very situational, by that I mean you will need to observe very carefully your surroundings during an earthquake. However, the very first thing you need to do is to be calm. Being calm will help a lot with your observation and decision making.
In situations, where you are unable to run out to a safe and open clear area then it would be better to stay indoors. Get into your room and stay under a table or overturn your divan mattress (thick) over you. Also, make sure you are close to a wall if possible close to a strong point (like a beam) This is to prevent any big heavy debris from knocking you when it falls.
If you have time grab some essentials like torchlight, water, broom stick or long stick, wet towel to wrap round your mouth and nose to help you breathe better, soup pot to protect your head and make noise if you are buried. Mobile phones may not be of help as communication network would be destroyed during the quake. But if you have it, switch it off during the initial period to conserve battery life and occasionally switch it on to see if the network has been restored to enable you to call for help.
After the initial quake, if you are able to run then be very careful where you run, because there will be intermittent quakes, building collapsing and landslides. If your place is clear and open then stay till help arrives.
If you are buried then check if you are alright and if there is space for you to move. If you can see light then, use the stick and push it out (attach a piece of cloth from your clothing/ handkerchief at the end), this is to help attract attention and the dogs from the rescue teams.
At all times remain calm and slow down your breathing. Rest as much as you can to conserve energy.

Very good suggestions. i have learnt a lot. Si chuan province in china has just suffered the natural disaster. So many victims! Help from around the world are very timely. Thanks for all of those kind and generous people. As long as we humans unite we can defeat the difficulties.

Thank you for the best response award, I am just relating what I know and hope that it will be of help.
I hope that your quake victims will be able to rebuild their homes soon, and that the dam situation will be resolved soon. I am just worried about the impending floodings.

It's suggested that people should not hide under the heavy table or other such things, but near them. Is it true?

If you hide under something also remember to lock your hands over your neck while kneeling down to protect yourself from any flyin debris.
If you are in a tall building and getting out is impossible then stand in the doorway. That will be the strongest place at that moment and you'll have less chance of stuff falling on you.

We've had an earthquake here. One thing I learned was to get out of the house, it's a whole lot safer! I keep an old purse hanging on a knob in my closet with my banking info, and stuff like that, and if and when it happens again, I grab it and exit the house. (At least that way I will have my important info, and if the house should get destroyed at least I have money to eat with and all) While ours was nothing like the magnitude and destruction of China's last earthquake, it's still scary when it happens. You feel totally at a loss as what to do, and where to go! wm...were you affected by that last earthquake? When I heard about it on the news, you were the first person I thought of and prayed for! I hope you and your loved ones weren't affected by that calamity!

As far as I know earthquake is a disturbance on the linings of the earth's crust. Most commonly cause by the behaviours of the fluids lining underneath the earth. There will be fault movements that will result in the surface's movement as well giving as the quake named as earthquake.

One thing for sure, do not stay under a roof, a tree, on a car, or anything you suspect could fall on top of you and where you are !

some say that hiding under the table would also be safe to help us avoid some things that are falling and of course, don't panic
